Chevrolet Cobalt: Plain Vanilla

by George_Chabot Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50
Sep 08 '06

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Build quality better than recent GM vehicles, basic commuter transportation
Cons: Cheap and not likely to live much longer than the warranty
The Bottom Line: The basic Chevrolet Cobalt would provide reasonably cheap commuter transportation. I had the impression the car would not outlast the payments, so don't load it up with options.

Chevrolet Cobalt: Plain Vanilla I had the opportunity to put a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt LS sedan through its paces on a recent car rental. The car had 2,000 miles on the clock, making me among the first to drive it. I’m used to driving a ...

Did the definition of "super" change at some point?

by mkaresh mkaresh is a Lead on Epinions in Cars & Motorsports, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10
Sep 05 '05 - Updated Sep 18 '06

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Solid construction, quiet ride
Cons: Very little sport, even in the Super Sport; tight rear seat
The Bottom Line: SS fails as a sport sedan. Needs tuning closer to that of the SS Supercharged coupe.

A few years back GM decided to get serious once again about creating sport versions of its various models, going so far as to set up a new Peformance Division led by Mark Reuss (son of one time GM president Lloyd) to develop them. The Chevrolets ...

Decent, but Lacking Anything Special

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Stylish exterior; roomy interior; decent pickup; good mileage; cheap.
Cons: Poor handling; not a very smooth ride; cheap-looking interior.
The Bottom Line: The Cobalt is a solid choice for an economy car, but make sure you look around first before settling.

A recent stint at the body shop for my car had me driving a 2006 Chevy Cobalt for a couple weeks. The Cobalt turned out to be a decent economy car that got me around without any issues, but other than a fancy coat there was nothing too impressive to get ...

Contents: one basic car. To the Rent-Mobile, O Caped Wonder!

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Good physical quality; interior much improved over past Chevys. Gets the basic job done well.
Cons: Boring, boring, boring. Handling is not sharp. Competitors have much more character.
The Bottom Line: It's an automotive appliance. Four wheels, four seats, four doors, four cylinders. Decent quality; the quintessential Rentmobile. Not exciting, but does the job.

While waiting for the sheet metal gurus to repair my bent VW Passat (a one-month wait), I rented a Chevrolet Cobalt LS sedan to move me around my life; there were no bells-and-whistles. After 31 days and 1500 miles, a few conclusions can be reached. ...

A Great Car for Really Tall Women Who Like to Drive in Platform High Heels

by tomcruzcontrol
May 20 '06 - Updated May 25 '06

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: powerful base model for money, LTZ is both economical and lavish, many other models available
Cons: suspension is a little busy on the highway, no SS engine on LTZ model
The Bottom Line: The Chevrolet Cobalt has a lot to offer with it's many different models, especially if you're in the market for the ever-rare economy luxury car.

INTRODUCTION AND INTERIOR I test drove a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt sedan LT. That's a high trim level, and different from the LTZ mostly in cosmetics. The LTZ has a chrome grille and 16 inch wheels instead of the painted grille and 15 inch wheels on the ...

Pros: Smooth, quiet, great blend of performance and economy, features
Cons: Styling is bland
The Bottom Line: If you're considering an import, consider the Cobalt. You'll get a lot for your money with all the quality.

Introduction The Chevorlet Cobalt, also marketed as the Pontiac Pursuit and Pontiac G5 in Canada, is General Motor's replacement for the Sunfire and Cavalier. The Cobalt marks a complete turn-around for this size and class of car. This will ...

What's this? A Chevrolet? A small car... impossible!

by a790
Mar 02 '06

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Attractive, fun, great audio, big rims, nice suspension.
Cons: Turning off the headlights are overly complicated.
The Bottom Line: This car is perfect for someone who wants the SS supercharged, but can't afford it.

Who would have thought that Chevrolet would have produced a decent small car? THE STORY BEGINS I find myself firmly planted in the driver’s seat of a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt SS N/A. This is the SS without the supercharger. It’s a midnight ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Sporty styling and performance. This car boasts around 1 hp per cubic inch.
Cons: Interior trim defects.
The Bottom Line: This is a great alternative to the higher priced Mustang and Monte carlo. It combines a sporty look,Smooth ride, and a responsive drive train.

I bought my 2006 Cobalt Lt after a drunk driver totalled my other work vehicle. The dealer wanted $17000 for the model with 28000 miles (it was a rental car). I signed the papers at $13000. The car had a few cosmetic issues ( the door pull chrome was ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: lots of space, good options, good handling
Cons: loud engine, below-average gas mileage
The Bottom Line: With such low prices, this car is great for the money!

I bought a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt LT on December 29th, 2006. I have now had it for about 10 weeks and have driven about 3500 miles. I picked this car because I am a college student and needed a reliable car that would also be affordable. This car ...

Gets you where your going but bad electronics!

by jphillips01
Aug 30 '07 - Updated May 18 '08

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Quiet, 32-35 MPG, smooth, pretty cheap
Cons: Bad electronics, small trunk opening, regular fuel makes the car run worse.
The Bottom Line: Great mechanically sound vehicle but the electronics will need work! Still, at this price you can afford to fix the electronics.

Mechanically, this seems to be a pretty good car. The transmission shifts smoothly, engine is quiet and has quite a bit of pickup for a small car. I have 41,000 miles on my Cobalt and purchased it back in January of this year with 29,000. So far, ...

Cobalt a good deal, if it holds up

by bluenoser66
Jan 15 '06 - Updated Apr 11 '06

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: solidly built, good acceleration, good price/financing, clips for the kids' seatbelts a nice touch
Cons: small rear seat, cheap feeling interior, poor interior storage, see updated comments on steering vibration
The Bottom Line: a good deal if the price/financing are right, appears to be well-built. Gas mileage and interior are disappointing. And hopefully the steering vibration can be fixed.

A quick update: this car had a vibration at low speed(say 10-20 kms while turning, worse while braking and turning, from day one. Initial comment from dealer was that the brakes probably were not seated yet. After a few thousand kms we needed some other ...

GM still cannot match the foreign competitors

by vwgtiguy
Aug 02 '07

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Nice though sparse guages. Nice stereo with aux jack, functional headrests
Cons: Cheap interior, no power package, hard flat seats, feels like a rental.
The Bottom Line: As a rental its fine but considering you can find better cars in the 13-15k price range even used I cant see why someone would pick this.

I am renting a Cobalt LS while my VW GTI is in the bodyshop. All I can say is I am utterly disappointed. I really wanted to like this GM product. This car screams rental all around. The interior styling is not horrible, guages are nice, radio is nice but ...

Loving My Cobalt
by chevylover64
Sep 09 '06
Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Radio controls on steering, comfortable seats, smooth quiet ride
Cons: I haven't found any yet.
I decided to go with the Cobalt LT. It had the small body I was looking for and still had the semi sporty look. If you are looking for a luxury car of course this is not the one, but for a small sedan this is a great car at a great price. The seats are more comfortable than I imagined. You always figure if it has a cheap price the interior will be cheap, but not the case with this car. Front seating area is roomy and the air conditioner will freeze you out. Rear defrost works very quickly too.

A competitive car in its range
by barstewart_dt3000

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Good head room, decent gas mileage, good power. Smooth and fairly quiet on hwy.
Cons: Radio sometimes "lock"s out and I have to stop and start the car to reset.
'Had a Pontiac Pursuit for 6 weeks, as a courtesy car. 110 Km (60-70 miles)/day.
'Very impressed with the power and smoothness — and the deep overdrive. Many 4-cyl cars cruise at 3,000 rpm at hwy speeds of 60 mph (100 km/h). This one is at 2,200 and it's not switching in and out of overdrive if you put the gas on a little heavier or go up a hill. It has the power to stay in overdrive and still accelerate.
My loaner has a/c, tach and cruise, plus the digital readout for the outside temp, oil life, trip meter — and the fuel mileage. With that, you're able to see how different speeds or other factors affect your mileage. It's not a gas miser, but it's decent fuel economy — especially if you don't speed.
Good head room and comfortable seats. Turns tight.
It also seems to have traction control on the drive wheels. (No ABS) On ice, wet pavement, or gravel — you hit the gas and the wheels spin for a few seconds — then the engine just about dies for 2-3 seconds. Saves on tires if you have a young driver borrowing the car!

Average "euro" car...
by jldude
Nov 05 '06
Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No
Pros: Awesome speakers, very quiet, nice looking exterior shape
Cons: INTERIOR PLASTIC!, low fuel eco., clock looking speedometer, too heavy
I rented this car for 5 days, it was ok but not exceptional in any way except maybe the sound system. My biggest problem, if you're not careful, you will scrape skin off trying to roll windows down the interior plastic is so bad. Also, I don't care for the "euro" look of the instruments and interior, gimme the all american black on white gauges! The speakers do sound very good, and the interior is very quiet on hwy but those are the best things I can tell. It is NOT very efficient on gas, even with base engine. This car is too heavy for it's engine. I like the outside design of the car, but hate the inside layout. The only way the cobalt could best a mazda or similar import is with the SS maybe.
