2006 Toyota RAV4: Can an SUV Be OVER-"Improved"???

by mrkstvns Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50
Mar 10 '06

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Back seat is almost usable now, well-configured cargo space
Cons: TOO big, TOO refined, TOO equipped, TOO pricey
The Bottom Line: I'm not crazy about the RAV4. It just strikes me as a vehicle that's refined out the impurities that made it worth knowing...another bland, mediocre SUV.

Cars are like people, they all have their individual quirks and personalities, and sometimes you get along with them, and sometimes you just don't see eye to eye. This past week, I've been driving a 2006 Toyota RAV4, and it's one of those cars that ...

Revving up my new RAV4...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Reliable car with lots of thoughtful touches.
Cons: Back seat doesn't really seat three people. Back door opens from side instead of top.
The Bottom Line: I'm glad to be revving up my new Toyota RAV4, but if you have a big family, you might want to keep looking.

This review has been a long time coming. Up until last week, I was driving a very basic 1997 Toyota Corolla. That car served me very well for almost eight years and 120,000 miles, but it was beginning to look like an eyesore. It was time to trade up ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: V6 and third-row available; roomy; fun to drive with the V6
Cons: Thoroughly typical of the class in four-cylinder, five-passenger form
The Bottom Line: A thoroughly competent and pleasant compact SUV, without the V6 and third row too little distinguishes it aside from the Toyota name.

In the past, Toyota has made product decisions that almost make it seem like it doesn't want to do too well. The first Sienna minivan was a half-size smaller than the leaders. The styling of the Highlander and Camry could not be more boring. The Tundra ...

Pros: Interior, Safety, Performance, Turning radius, Overall size, Audio system
Cons: Suspension, rear door, 3rd row seat, fuel efficency, supply shortages.
The Bottom Line: Until I get used to this suspension, I can't recommend it.

I have the V6 4WD base model with the 3rd row seat and the towing prep package. This package does not contain a towing hitch even though the Toyota web site says it does, just pre-wiring and some enhanced transmission fluid system. I have 670 miles ...

Cons: Audio, road noise, cabin refinements
The Bottom Line: Toyota reliabilty made me go for this one. It does have flaws however.

Our family bought a RAV4 2005 model last September and we bought a 2006 model this August. Because we now have 2 RAVs I am compelled to review the 2006 model as it compares to the 2005. Engine: Our 2005 is a 4 cyl and is quite peppy but when I was ...

Cons: a few cosmetic quirks, Gated shifter, miss the 'OD' button.
The Bottom Line: Definitely worth looking into and at least test driving. Price Paid: $23,355

BACKGROUND I traded in a 2003 Saturn Vue V6 AWD for the 2006 Rav4 2.4L - My experience with the RAV is limited to my wife's 2004 4wd base model. There are a few things I liked about both vehicles that I miss/dislike in the 2006 model. My 2006 is a ...

Cons: None I can think of...
The Bottom Line: Very well designed little vehicle. It's probably not the perfect car for everyone but it was as close to perfect as we could find.

First I'd like to say I second just about all the comments "friendly_jacek" has mentioned about the RAV4. I too find it hard to believe there are so few reviews on this vehicle. Especially since it is so much different than the previous RAV4 design. I ...

Pros: Good fuel economy for an suv. Easy to drive. Great standard features, size, comfort
Cons: A little pricey. Hard to find 6 cyl with the option package you might want.
The Bottom Line: Great SUV for someone who wants Toyota reliability, economy and style.

Yea this isn't as cute as the prior years...I don't want cute. I wanted to go back to a Toyota PU with a club cab, but this is better if you don't need an open bed. I drove the 4 cyl in January and found it very nice. Then I drove the 6 cyl last ...

Pros: Well rounded package. Great power and handling. Good towing car.
Cons: Some options hard to get. Considered a girly car by some.
The Bottom Line: The finest small SUV available here, period (now, i'm talking V6, 3rd row seats here).

This is very strange to have so few reviews for 2006 RAV4 as the 2006 model has been around for a year and 2007 model (basically unchanged compared to 2006) has been around now for a few months. Nevertheless, this is my take on the car. I bought 2006 ...

Cons: I have no complaints!
The Bottom Line: Looking for an SUV with lots of room, high level of safety, and great gas milage this is your car!

I bought my RAV4 NEW/USED (It had 200 miles on it, someone traded it in after having it a week) in the summer of 2006. I have enjoyed the great gas milage (22-24MPG) that this vehicle gets, especially with the ever rising gas prices. I also like how much ...

Pros: Solid 4WD operations, competent ride & handling
Cons: Gas mileage, rattles, no Auto headlights, no radio information, cheesy cupholders.
The Bottom Line: Toyota quality is not what it used to be, they are getting cheaper with materials, things like seats & trim rattle. Would shop the competition next time.

Unsafe ECU in 2006 Toyota Rav4
by raviola4
Oct 17 '06
Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Quality, comfort, ride, handling, features.
Cons: Electronic throttle or ECU or whatever. Serious safety flaw.
I have a 4 cyl. 2006 LTD Rav4. Overall very pleased with the car, but it has a serious safety issued relating to the ECU. I don't know that much about it, something to do with an electronic throttle or some such thing. Anyway, if you check other forums you'll see more and more complaints of a serious Lag or Hesitation normally 2 seconds or so when trying to either merge, or accelerate from a slow speed. I've nearly been rear ended on 3 occassions. I'm 58 so i know how to drive, but when you push on an accelerator to merge etc. it should pick up speed, not get lost in some strange mode. Toyota claims this is normal. understand Camry has same issue (not sure if with 4 cyl. or what) but possible ECU solution or computer change etc. Anyway, for this one issue alone i cannot recommend the Rav4. Shame cause it overall is a great vehicle.

Best Vehicle I have Ever Owned
by dogs4nyt
Aug 28 '07
Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: cup holders, wonderful storage space, cell phone holder, fun and sporty to drive, reliability.
Cons: Front passenger and driver lumbar support adjustments, rear opening window, aftermarket blue tooth.
This is the best vehicle I have ever owned. It is fun to drive and when I want to get up and go she just flies.

I have recommended a RAV4 to many people and they too have purchases them and loved them just as much.

It has a nice turning radius, great on snow and ice, no lagging on hills. It cleans easily with just a wet rag, I did purchase rubber husky mats to preserve the floors (recommended).

I average around 25.5 mpg and have gotten as much as 28 mpg on the highway. It is a bit lower in the winter (21-22 mpg) but I figure it is because of the AWD being used. Defiantly not complaining there since I want to be safe.

BUY ONE!!

Love my 2006 RAV 4 V-6

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Handling, power, pretty car - nice for women.
Cons: The regular model doesn't have leather or sunroof.
This is my favorite car, love it better than my 2004 4Runner. It is easy to drive - I was getting tired of my trucks: Pathfinder, Durango, 4 Runner. Comparatively, the size of the RAV4 is really nice. Plus lots of storage in the rear area. I actually like the side-open rear door. It is nice for camping and putting stuff in. I do not hit my head on the swing up rear door of previous vehicles.

Living in the mountains of Colorado, I of course got the V6. The RAV4 is spirited and responsive. I haul up the mountain roads at 80 mph if needed and still have power on hold.

I am a mom with kids. If you love yourself get rid of those SUV trucks, and buy one of these beauties.

RAV4: Couldn't be happier!

Apr 17 '06
Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Fuel economy, power, cargo room, comfort, JBL stereo, utility, safety features
Cons: Cupholders and cargo light and trying to wipe the grin off my face when driving!
We traded in a 1996 4Runner and were looking for something a little more economical to drive, with more horsepower and safety features, while having maximum cargo. The RAV4 Ltd. 6-cylander we bought is a joy to own. It has more than enough power (269 hp) and the fuel efficiency is about 1/3 more than the 4Runner. (We're getting ~24 mpg.) The fit and finish is perfect. Only minor complaints are that the front cupholders, while able to hold Big Gulp sized cups well, hold smaller cups less well. And the rear cargo light that is on the door is poorly placed and dim.

I researched this vehicle quite extensively. Other vehicles we considered were the X-Trail, Forester, CRV, Highlander Hybrid, and Lexus Hybrid SUV. The RAV4's combination of fuel efficiency, power, cargo room, safety and reliability tilted the scales very decidedly in its favor. Zero regrets.

Toyota Quality Good MPG Great Looks, Acceleration & Handling = 2006 RAV4

Pros: Favorite feature is the V6 engine...it is a MUST HAVE!
Cons: When wearing sunglasses, the radio and clock displays are virtually invisible.
2006 Toyota RAV4 Sport V6 4X2
I would gladly recommend this vehicle to anyone that doesn't want to give up the fun and versatility of driving an SUV but does not want to go bankrupt at the gas pump. The new RAV4 is an amazing ride and handles like a dream. Toyota's standards of quality, fit and finish is evident and inspires confidence.

Toyota's reputation for quality plus the RAV4's good gas mileage is why I traded in my 05 Ford Escape V6 4X4. Since it is a Toyota, I know that when the time comes the resale value is there...unlike my Escape!

Pros: 0-60 in 6.3 secs. Toyota reliability. Plenty of cargo space.
Cons: Hard to find exactly what you want because they're so popular.
What can I say? This is just one awesome vehicle. Don't even look at the 4 cyl. Go for the V-6. With 269 hp this baby is not your average SUV. In fact when your driving it you swear your in a sports car. And don't think your going to save any gas with the 4 cyl either. The difference is minimal. Probably because the 4 cyl only offers a four speed transmission while the V-6 comes with the five speed. There is not another vehicle in it's class that can offer this kind of handling, power, and fuel economy at this price.

the pros by far out weights the cons.

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Brilliant shape, beautiful interior
Cons: heavy on fuel
Don't confuse the 2007 Toyota RAV4 with one of those vehicles that looks like an SUV but can't really rise to the challenge. RAV4 is a 4-cylinder SUV built to outsmart most obstacles in your way -- including the gas pump. Inside and out, Toyota designers made the RAV4 even larger, putting ingenious utility into a sleek body. Combine all this with an available V6 engine rated at 269 horsepower and 246 lb.-ft. of torque, and it's a powerful argument for why RAV4 is one SUV that can handle just about anything, to help keep you moving forward.

I'm a little concerned about the city mileage on the 2006 RAV4 V6. I have Sport with 700 miles and city driving only I am getting only 15MPG. My city driving is extremely conservative and I can not image what could be responsible for the difference between the sticker mileage of 21 and what I am actually getting city driving. Should I be driving more aggressively in the city instead of trying to save gas???

But in an overall opinion of this car, it’s an awesome machine, and the pros by far out weights the cons.

We have gone from a Previa 4wd to the new rav4 v6 4wd sport and couldn't be happier. Just the gas mileage savings will help pay for the stiffer price. Good room, comfortable and powerful.

Pros: nice pep for a 4 cyl, comfortable ride, easy fold rear seats
Cons: gas latch, tire warning, power window button, acoustics, rear door,
sleek easy to get in and out, back door strange and cumbersome, dash warnings = overkill. wide opening doors, it's a shame as overall this would be an excellent car !
tire warning light for no reason ? was told warning light was possibly spare tire was low? brakes noisy dealership fix with no explanation how? Love the suspension and the comfortable ride. getting power windows to open small portions is nearly impossible ! do not dare open back windows without cracking front windows just right or you will fell like your in a vacuum tube ! cup holders are to shallow, and to wide for standard soda bottle to hold upright.

RAV4 '07 Limited
by stissenko
Jan 30 '07
Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Appearence, easy to drive, keeps the road
Cons: MPG on highway is 24-45.
Bought my RAV4 Limited 2 months ago and have already put almost 5000 miles on it (last week changed oil for the first time).

So far, I haven't found any "cons" for this car. It is easy to drive, quite even at high speeds, keeps the road really well. My parents were complaining they couldn't see time and vent controls well, so those who need glasses should consider it.

This car has a nice kick (I have 4-cylinder), but although I never "floor" it, MPG is not that great. Sticker says 23/27, but even on a highway I never can get more than 24-25 (I drove it to FL, so I have had a chance to estimate MPG).

It is very easy to turn, has this slick appearence and relatively easy to park. Overall, I recommend this car.
