Pros: Famous brand Cons: Almost unusable. Very poor customer service
This modem crashes my system frequently when I am online. After each crash the error message shows that one of its driver file has problem (3c1807pd.sys). That is why I know it is modem's problem instead of browser's problem.
Pros: More reliable than my emachine's standard modem. Doesn't continually disconnect me. Cons: So far, so good. Haven't had any problems with it.
I bought an emachine summer of 2003 (something I had sworn I'd never do but the price was too good). The modem that was installed in it was of course very low quality. The modem in my old computer is slower at 33.6kbps and usually connected at 31 ...
Pros: It was cheap...guess you get what you pay for! Cons: Total waste of time and money!
I have to agree with most of the reviewers on this item. It is not worth 2 cents. My system came with one of the PCTel modems on the motherboard, and it was marginal, so I decided to upgrade to a US Robotics..figured with their reputation, they would ...
Pros: Nice Call waiting feature. Cons: Does not support Window Me.
You can find out what this modem really is by reading the link below:
http://808hi.com/56k/usr.asp
The modem comes packed in a box that says it supports Window Me and 9X, but in actual case it does not. ( as yet).
The driver on the USR...
As though the lard of requiring three processes running to support it weren't enough, those processes fail when I access my DVD drives. And that, of course, causes the modem to fail. Trying to reexecute the processes -- two instances of usrmlnka.exe and one of usrshuta.exe -- fails, leaving restart as the only solution.
Worse yet, it doesn't look like a driver has been updated for this piece of junk since 2001.
Pros: Readily available at Walmart for less than $30. Store is open on Sunday, early too. Cons: The USR modem support people do not have a fix for the intermittent hang up.
Modem disconnects (hangs up) intermittently. This is second modem with problems. First was Broadbandxent which would only connect at 19.2 kbit rate. Conexant modem failed and went off hook without reason.
Believe us, this is for sure, a BAD Modem by headham2003 ,Jan 11 '04
Pros: Just one - I also, still have the receipt. Cons: Too many problems for me. See text.
Unfortunately, I didn't do my usual check here at Epinions before buying this piece of garbage. I was at looking for a new modem and there was a good priced modem from a good??? manufacturer. WRONG!! After installing it, Windows 2000 couldn't even find it, over and over. Finally, I moved it to a another slot and it worked - sort of. It takes many, many redials to connect. Sometimes it connects - sometimes just won't. When it does, it is sooo slow. I kept thinking that I must have configured something wrong, until I checked here and saw the other reviews. Surely, we couldn't have all configured it wrong. What-a-u-think, is it the modem?? I strongly suggest NOT buying products from this company, specifically this modem.
PS. I am an experienced hardware/software geek. I've had my problems and issues with old oddball devices, but this modem is supposed to be new and current.
Pros: Name Brand, cheap. Cons: Stopped working, horrible customer service.
This modem is junk. I bought it because it was at a reasonable price, and thought that USR was a good name brand. Boy, was I wrong! I've had problems with it from day one. It would disconnect for no apparent reason, and I'd have to uninstall the drivers, reboot and reinstall them. However, one day it decided to get really flaky and would only connect if you plugged the phone line in right before you dialed. The rest of the time, it would just try to stay on the phone line. I called USR's support line, which, by the way, does not happen to be toll-free (they have a 900-number where you can pay 2.99 a minute and get a person immediately), and was on hold for at least 20 minutes, with no one ever answering the phone. So I gave up and bought a different modem. The connection speeds when I first got the USR modem were okay, but soon became worse and worse. It got to the point where the modem wouldn't even download my email for me, let alone actually go to any website.
Pros: Cheap, always works, haven't had a problem Cons: The drivers that came with this modem are bad
I have had no problems with mine, i connect 44.0 Kbps to 48.0 Kbps all the time. My modem does not drop the connection or any of that stuff. Just don't use the driver that comes with the modem, use the Windows driver. The modem is good, but the drivers that came with it is bad.
Pros: None Cons: reboots computer unexpectedly, crashes driver interface, data transfer comes to a stand-still.
This modem is terrible. I tried three different drivers 1)supplied by Windows XP, 2) supplied on CD, 3) updated driver on web site, and this modem is chuck full of problems. The driver supplied with XP causes a GPF in the driver interface, causing me to reboot. The driver on the CD and the updated driver on their web site causes my computer to cold reboot automatically while clicking on Internet links. With each of the three drivers, my data transfer will come to a stand-still for no reason, even when checking my email. I contacted tech support and they said they haven't heard of these problems before. I definitely wasted my money on this modem and I was relieved after reading all of the negative reviews here knowing that it wasn't just me having all of the problems.
I hate to admit it, but I ended up buying two of these "paper weights". The first one worked intermittently and eventually quit working completely after a couple of months. I thought it must be the result of a power surge, even though I have redundant surge protection in my new house. I concluded this because I thought highly of USR and have had good experiences in the past.
So based on that...I bought another one! Same problems as with the last one (control center issues, dropping connections, slow connect speeds, virus like activity, etc.) I will never buy another USR product again. What an idiot I was to buy another one :-(
Pros: Getting rid of it Cons: Ever considering buying it.
Tried 3 of these in three separate computers, 2 Dell's and 1 HP. By far, The worst modem I have ever had. Software can't find the modem, modem then somehow slows down and randomly crashes the entire computer even when it isn't being used. Almost like a built-in hardware virus. Then the phone jack shorts out and takes down your phone line. The only good thing is when you finally remove it from your motherboard and throw it away.
