Pros: Easy setup, Great features, worth a look ! Cons: None !!!
I purchased this unit off the clearance rack at Circuit City, and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made ! For $99 I thought that I was taking a chance, but over the last 3 months, its proved to be a brilliant piece of electronics.

Pros: 2 tuners, Record 2 shows at once, Pause live TV, Instant replay.
Cons: Not currently available through retail. WEB TV connection is slow
For the life of me I can't figure out why Microsoft stopped making this product! It has all of the features that I was looking for in a DVR. What Microsoft has to say about this product: UltimateTV is digitally recorded television. It's what? ...
Pros: Great picture - even recorded! Cons: Buggy, can't disable sounds
OK - at least the Tivo I have seen. I recently purchased my first home (yeah!!!) and the previous owner already had DirecTV. I was pretty fed up with digital cable - both the cost and the quality - which I found to be lacking. So, I knew I was heading ...
Pros: Picture-in-picture, simultaneous view and record, easy to program recordings Cons: WebTV a nuisance unless you need it
My wife and I are discriminating TV viewers, but our schedule required us to use our VCR to watch our favorite programs. However, when we switched from cable to DirecTV, our VCR+ features were no longer usable, and we had to go back to manual recording...
Pros: Two Tuners and WebTV ready! Cons: WebTV is limited to a 56K modem speed!
The RCA DWD490RE is one of the most complete Satellite receivers I have seen. This receiver has two tuners built-in so you can use your picture-in-picture feature on your TV to watch two different channels from the satellite. The receiver can also record...
Pros: Two tuner capability, recording up to 35 hours of TV, no loss of video quality Cons: No ability to archive shows permanently (yet), interface is a bit sluggish at times
It's a shame that epinions has buried the UltimateTV receivers in with all the other Satellite receivers, because this is truly a unique item. I purchased mine as soon as it was available, and I couldn't be happier! (I returned my Tivo within a week of...
Considering the service first. by loueloui ,Nov 08 '06
Pros: Ultimate TV is a good product. Cons: Comes with Directv service. Directv sucks.
As far as receivers go this one is not bad. The RCAs are far better than the Philips models. However, most models perform about the same, and have the same features.
More importantly consider the SERVICE. Directv has some of the most horrific customer service. I have been lied to repeatedly. Been lied to about being lied to. They really could care less.
UltimateTV is still superior, 5 years later by familyman2005 ,Jul 20 '05
Pros: more functions, better image quality, easy to navigate Cons: no longer being updated by Microsoft
What a shame that Microsoft decided to abandon support of Ultimate TV. I own 2 boxes, both purchased in 2001.
Two months ago DirecTV incented me with an offer to give TiVo a shot, for free with a one-year service extension. I took the bait and it was installed.
Yesterday, I uninstalled TiVo and re-installed Ultimate TV, for $5 a month more.
I'm no technical expert, but would make the following observations:
1) the picture quality is absolutely outstanding and superior to TiVo
2) the menu and navigation of the system is clean, fast, and easy to follow
3) "Picture in Picture" works even if you do not have that feature on your TV. UltimateTV allows me to watch 2 sporting events on the same screen and also shuffle between the audio feed of each
4) Caller ID can be activated to pop up on the screen so that when the phone rings, one can make a quick, informed decision whether to blow it off.
If you can find these boxes out there, DirecTV will still support them. In my opinion it's still worth it.
