After looking at Norton Ghost 2003 and Drive Image 7 and coming across a lot of bad reviews for those products, I decided Acronis True Image would be the ticket. I purchased this product via instant download. Tried to do my first backup -- to write a ...

Don't count on it in an emergency. by john_mc ,Dec 27 '05
Pros: A great product--when it's working, that is. Cons: When something goes wrong, you're on your own. Acronis has the industry's worst support.
True Image works great, unless it fails. The program has saved me several times, but that was when it was working perfectly. I recently learned that if you encounter a problem, youre on your own. Acronis now outsources their support to incompetent people who have big trouble communicating and understanding technical issues. Worse yet, the only option you have is email--phone support is unavailable. Ive been in the computing field for over 25 years, and Acronis has the worst level of support Ive ever encountered from a software company. Believe me, if anything goes wrong, you're on your own. You definitely don't want to find yourself in a situation where you've lost your data and the recovery program isn't working properly. As I recently learned, there are real problems with True Image which can show up at the most inopportune times. That applies to versions 7, 8, and 9. So if you want a backup program you can count on, and a company you can turn to when you need them most, you definitely don't want True Image by Acronis.
Buggy software; terrible support by rniebaum ,Jul 15 '04
Pros: Great concept (too bad it doesn't work) Cons: Software does not work; support appears non-existent
I thought my prayers were answered when I first learned about Acronis True Image 7.0. I wanted to be able to image my partitions incrementally and thought I would be able to with ATI.
My ATI emergency boot disks (I made several copies) were unable to boot my machine (a straight-forward HP running fully-current Win XP Home Edition) and instead required a cold boot.
I was also unable to use the Image Explorer to view files in my archive (34 CD's later).
After waiting over a week to hear *anything* besides an automated reply from Technical Support, I requested a refund, which I got thanks to Digital River and their instant download software marketplace.
Pros: I can find no pros with this software Cons: It just does not work as advertised
As a previous user of version 6 I eagerly installed the version 7 build 611 to use a usb external hard drive to boot restore from. What a disaster!
It just will not recognise the usb device from the boot cd function, which is as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike to me. I have tried it on my laptop and my desktop with the same result.
The support has been ok with numerous requests to run tests and supply data - all of which I have done. However after a month they have lost interest and I am up a creek without a boat - never mind the paddle.
I hold no hope of getting my cash back of course.
I will be using Symantec/Powerquest Drive Image 7 in future.
Flawless, Easy Data Restore by gbtynan ,Mar 09 '04
Pros: Versatile, Easy Interface, Delivers what it promises Cons: None I could Find
I had a failing hard drive in a notebook. I created a disk image using Acronis 7.0 onto an external HD using a USB1.1 interface. Then swapped the internal hard drive in the notebook for a new one, and rebooted using the recovery software from a rescue CD that Acronis creates. Even though you have no Operating System on your computer, the rescue CD takes over and handles the restore function. The restore process itself was very very smooth, with no errors, crashes or annoying tweaking. When it was done the notebook booted up EXACTLY as it had before the restore process. There was zero left to do. It was as if the old hard drive had never existed. The new hard drive now had an exact copy of what the old one had. The O/S (Win XP Pro) and all data, settings etc restored precisely as they had been.(took 9 hours to restore the disk image with a relatively slow USB1.1 interface and a big capacity drive, but so what? - just sleep through it!)
I strongly recommend this product if you are faced with the scary task of swapping out a hard drive!
