The only thing was that I had requested the washer/dryer combo unit to be delivered in a box without any mention of the nature of the product (no washing machines allowed in my building), a blank box or TV delivery box would have been ideal replacements: it wasn't done, which could have generated huge problems with the management of the building! And I had requested to get a call in the morning of delivery to confirm the time of delivery of the product, which was never made. No issues with AJ Madison, but AJ Madison *did* select the delivery company and that company, HomeDirectUSA, is scary. They do not complete any of the tracking information so the customer can see the status and location of their order. I finally had to call AJMadison as my contractor was screaming down my neck for the built in appliances.
Finally reached the delivery people, and the woman laughed! Thought it was terribly funny that HomeDirectUSA had "forgotten" to complete and update the tracking form. I said I found nothing humorous in a situation that was costing me $1000 per day in man-hours.
I really like AJMadison; they're a fine company and I hope to do business with them again. However, next time, I'll place the order by phone and if they can't assure me of someone other than HomeDirectUSA for delivery, I'll probably take my business elsewhere. Read more

When first delivered I refused because of fork lift damage. Customer service assured me damaged part would be replaced and I accepted delivery. One of the air conditioners was on back order, but the other items were in stock. Initially, I was told that I would be contacted within a couple of days and told how long it would take to get the back-ordered unit.
A week went by, so I phoned AJ Madison. They said the back-ordered unit would be several weeks, and that the other items were available to be shipped to me. Again, they said that I would be contacted within a couple days about the specifics of the delivery -- which would be a LOCAL delivery, as they are in Brooklyn and I am in Manhattan.
Days passed, and I had second thoughts about the entire order -- a significant amount of money (around $2,500) at a time when it probably wasn't financially advisable for me. I checked AJ Madison's website for their cancellation policy, which stated that any order can be cancelled but possibly subject to a restocking fee or delivery fee if the item was already in transit.
When I phoned to cancel, I talked to the same not-particularly-pleasant woman I had talked to in the past. The first thing she said was, "I can't cancel your order." When I commenced reading the language from AJ Madison's website concerning cancellations to her, she belligerently interrupted me with, "SIR, blah blah blah a manager will call you. I personally cannot cancel this order. It has to have a manager's approval."
This was not exactly what I wanted to hear. I replied that I didn't care who approved it, and I wasn't interested in having anyone call me. She continued with her tirade, and I said, "I don't care, just have it cancelled!!" before I literally hung up on her.
So here we have a customer service rep who is authorized to take orders but not cancel them, and a manager purportedly needing to call me to discuss the cancellation. Doesn't this sound a little bit like AOL, to whom one has to justify cancelling an account and provide reasons, and who makes it as difficult as possible to cancel -- even at a cost to their reputation and customer goodwill?
I immediately sent an e-mail to sales@ajmadison.com quoting their cancellation policy, letting them know that there was nothing to discuss, and telling them that all their customer service representative needed to tell me was that my cancellation request would be forwarded to a manager for processing. Seriously, would that have been so difficult?
I got a response by e-mail the following day with a boilerplate message that my order was cancelled, and if I need any assistance with appliance selection or purchase in the future in which they could be of service to me, that they hoped I would keep them in mind for my needs.
I don't think so! For what it's worth, though, at least they didn't try to charge me for restocking and/or delivery. Read more
