Pros: Almost free (with Audible.com subscription), free cassette adapter Cons: Forgets where left off if battery dies or used PAUSE instead of STOP
I have been an Audible.com customer for about two years and have had the otis for about 5 months now. The otis player for Audible.com audible books, periodicals, and other spoken word pieces is a great deal if you subscribe to...
Pros: Lightweight
Cheap
Available with Audible.com subscription Cons: Bad software -
Poor Documentation/Instructions
No DC converter
I've had mine just a little over a week, so judge accordingly. Works with the Audible content as well as with downloaded MP3 and Windows Media. I love being able to take a book and/or music with me on trips and to the gym. Audible.com works like a ...
Pros: Very compact, 10 hrs 2 AAA batteries, ACELP.net, MP3, and WMA formats Cons: Does not show MP3 ID3 tags
Audible.com offers new subscribers the opportunity to receive a player called the Audible Otis "free" with a one-year commitment, or to purchase it at a discount with lesser commitments. The device is manufactured for Audible.com in Korea and people...
Pros: Light weight, Expandable memory (SD slot, I use 256mb cards), Ease of use (when working) Cons: Battery life is low (Mine only lasted 6-8 hours), Quality problems
The Otis performance is spotty at best. I have been an Audible .com member since they have started several years ago. The first player They offered is the Rio 500. Support was from Audible or Sonic Blue. When it crashed I could not find the programs to ...
Pros: God it's tiny Cons: You can skip tracks, but not to the beginning of the book
My library in King County just recently started stocking eAudio books, stored on Otis mp3 players, complete with batteries and headphones, preloaded with a book from audible.com.
I have been a fan of audio books for sometime, both on tape...
Pros: Small, good sound Cons: Software confusing, no belt clip, cant turn on after downloaded w/o removing the batteries
Got his Audible Otis from auction, thought "what the heck, it was cheap". Paid $25 for complete unit. Had some trouble installing the software, had to go to audible.com and get some updates, but figured it out fairly fast. I hooked it up to my windows xp ...
Pros: Best mp3 player around.. Cons: No bookmark in mp3 mode. Poor LCD old model.
I love my Otis(s)...have 10 and another 2 I gave my daughter..I also have 4 new Archos (all diff. models) & iPAQ 3835...I use mine mainly with mp3 and some audible...no matter what anyone tells you, it WILL work with flash cards of 512mb & have even used it with 1gb...ALWAYS format FAT & I load the card with my card reader...4.0 Audible does not run mp3, but 3.6 works fine...it works with ALL Otis, any firmware version & model..use NIMH rechargeables & always keep 3 or 4 Otis's ready to listen to.
Pros: good volume, easy to use with books Cons: mine requires low-level formatting every three months or so.
One of the very nice things about this unit is that it's actually loud enough to use while in a noisy gym. It's much louder than the Rio 500 and Rio 600 I've used.
I find this unit great for books. It keeps track of where you are when you turn off the unit. When listening to selections from audible.com, you can even fast-forward by chapter points.
I've never even needed to mess with any of the menus.
Pros: Small, easy to figure out, good audio quality Cons: Doesn't forward chapter to chapter like others do.
Unlike some of the other people writing reviews on this site, I've never had a problem with my Otis. I've had it for 3 years now and have never had an issue, and I use it fairly frequently (several hours a week). I had more problems with my Rio 500 and was glad to be rid of it when Audible sent me the Otis for free (consolation for a subscription cost increase). I've thought about looking into a new player, but really don't have a need to.
Pros: compact, light weight, ease of use and good battery life. Cons: seems to need its own battery adapter power supply.
I have been using mine for several month and am completely satisfied with it. Mine will fast forward or fast reverse. The battery life is very good for AAA batteries. The only drawback I have noticed is that mine will not take an universal power adapter. Otherwise I love it and you cant beat the deal through Audible.com.
Lots of useful functionality for a free MP3 player! by reumanmj ,Sep 25 '03
Pros: Small size, back-lit display, built in equalizer, free!! Cons: No scan ability while listening to an audio book. Cumbersome menus.
I have had the Audible Otis MP3 Player for 13 months. I have used it while doing yard work, riding my motorcycle, and during lunchtime at work. During the first 12 months of use, I listened to at least one audible book per month. The 64 megabytes of internal memory allow ample storage for audible books.
I initially chose this player because it was free. After using it for a couple of weeks, it was clear that it was better than my Creative Labs MP3 player. The Otis has several key features that I like. It has a predefined and user defined Equalizer settings. It has a back light. Also, It will hold your place in an audio book when you turn it off. The one item I would say needs improvement is the ability to scan backward or forward during while listening to an audio book.
Pros: Small, it seems like it works at first Cons: Absolute garbage, if it works, it won't for long.
This player works fine, for a while, then it starts to lose it's mind, won't turn off, won't display anything, won't be read by the buggy, NON XP COMPLIANT AUDIBLE SOFTWARE, hours spent with technicians, giving them total control of my computer, failed to make the first, second, or third Otis I got work. Audible is in denial about these things and their software, but both are awful. DON'T BUY AN OTIS unless you have a desire to be frustrated and annoyed.
Good but not great MP3 player by chewy33 ,Apr 26 '04
Pros: Great price; decent quality; Audible.com is awesome Cons: Small memory size
The Otis MP3 player provides decent quality, but the 64MB of memory is much too small. This amount of memory gets you about an hour and a half of listening. You should consider buying an MP3 player with a larger memory. With that said, the price is right (free with certain memberships to Audible.com) and Audible.com is awesome.
