What a rare Gem! by littlegem Pros: Teaching tolerance, love, and compassion.
Cons: The reality that we as humans are so cruel and judgemental. This has been one of the most inspiring books that I have read in quite some time. Candace is a rare Gem. I hope that we as human beings can only learn from this wonderful child. By the time you finish the book you will see the beauty inside and out. What a remarkable child. A gift for all ages.

Depends on how you define chick lit... by jessvi812 Pros: Excellent stories written by terrific female writers - certainly will get your reflective juices going.
Cons: "Short story" does not equal light reading in this instance. I chose to read this book because Jennifer Wiener is one of the writers and any book I have read by her I have truly loved. However, it certainly is "Not Chick Lit" as the genre is typically defined - light-hearted fluffy stories where the funny gal actually snags the guy. The short stories in this book are about the experiences of women across the gamut of characteristics, i.e. short, fat, ugly, religious, heterosexual and homosexual - some are funny and some are heartbreaking.

I must be honest, though, I am not a fan of short stories, and so if you aren't either I might recommend you steer clear of this read. If you are a teacher or professor, this would be a great read if you would like to get your students thinking about some of the issues that face women today. |

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE BOOK!!!! by cuteasacupcake Pros: None whatsoever!
Cons: Very boring and poorly written piece of trash! As a senior in high school, I was required to read this Cold War trash for my English class. My teacher told everyone (and I quote), "This is the book that people who hate reading end up liking." Well, I like reading OK, but this book was an utter piece of crap! About every chapter is literally at least 30 pages full of unnecessary gibberish and kept talking military speak. Alice the librarian hardly contributes anything to the story. It was very obvious that Helen and Dan liked each other without a full blown explanation. If that's not bad enough, it doesn't even tell how Randy and Lib became a couple. It just says they met one day and the next time Randy greets Lib with a kiss. If you people want to read a good book, then this is NOT the book to read!

Life of Pi - so much more than a novel by jodiholung Pros: Anyone with braincells would love this book
Cons: You might have to spend money on the book There are some stories that pull you in and make you believe no matter what your brain tells you. Those are the ones you can't put down without wondering if the story is going on without you.

Life of Pi is one such story. I was introduced to Yann Martel through another book, Self. This was a fictional autobiography, but it felt more like a collection of short stories strung together artistically and confidently by a writer who is in charge of his words, rather than the other way around. Martel's genius was only introduced to me in that book. But Life of Pi is a breathtaking achievement. Even the reader feels proud to have read the book and cried and laughed (out loud) with the characters. We're on the boat, on the floating island, back home on the zoo and finally washed up on the shore with young Pi, and we're cheering him on all the way. |

One-sided story by sixth1620 Pros: best seller
Cons: distortion of the facts Liysa is the "Gold Dust woman" if you believe everything in this one-sided novel. Ann Rule knows she left out one side of this story. I came across www.liysanorthon.com and am appalled at the way the facts are distorted in this work of fiction presented as purely factual. Why would anyone give up the life she had unless there was extreme provocation in the form of physical abuse. The motives attributed to her make no sense. What is the matter with laws that don't allow presentation of defense in this sort of case?

LOVED the content and illustrations by maryengstrom Pros: Lovely illustrations, solid examples of attitudes put in context for little ones.
Cons: A few examples are a little abstract. I thought her use of cookies to illustrate moral lessons was so well thought out for little ones. I didn't take the characters quite as seriously as the previous reviewer (and it didn't phase my kids ages 6, 4 and 2). This book gave us a good opportunity to discuss things like loyalty and envy in an easy to understand way. And all of these situations are ones that young children find themselves in. LOVED IT!

Barbara Walters wrote an clear account of her part in history, some that has been forgotten and should not have been. She is an incredible woman of our time and deserves kudos for being open and honest and sharing with us the real Ms. Walters. Thank you Barbara, for a wonderful book. |

Inspirational and Educational by brownsugar429 Pros: Concise regarding the challenges that Celie had to face
Cons: Would have liked to known what became of the relationship of Celie and Mister. This book was very moving from the first page to the last. The language might be a slight challenge for some. There were some slow moving chapters near the end but overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone looking to read a story regarding overcoming obstacles that life tends to put in your path.

Ask the Men's Health Girl Next Door review by toomuch20 Pros: an easy read, didn't take long to realize I've wasted my money
Cons: see above I purchased this book to see what one girl's view, and girl she is, was on relationships and sex in this modern era. It certainly doesn't speak for all women, doesn't even come close. Would love to know other men's testimonials in this regard, amateurish, one-dimensional, and void of legitimate action advice. Rather than speaking from her own inexperienced tongue, I suggest the author take testimonials from other women, not just in NYC, but worldwide...that would've truly spoken volumes. Further expert advice is needed, perhaps from psychologists, real sex therapists, and public relations experts. Simply existing as a female does not warrant this type of advice. Sorry, just trying to help those who are thinking about purchasing this book.

Great Guidebook by toddtraveller Pros: accurate
Cons: heavy I used this book during my first trip to China in fall 2007. We did not take any organized tours but travelled ALL by public transport.
View more details
We used the book in Beijing, Xian, Guilin, Pingan and Hong Kong. It was a great help. The maps are accurate. So are the informations "how to get there". There is a lot of Chinese script in it to show locals where you want to go by pointing to the characters. Every place name has a set of Chinese characters. As many people don't speak englisch, that is a VERY GREAT HELP. Have a look at my visit http://www.travel-picture-blog.com/china/forbidden-city-palace-museum-gugong-beijing-china/ |

Nightside series is a must! by iamsticman Pros: Good story, full of suspense.
Cons: Too short! Something from the Nightside is a whirlwind tale about a private detective who travels to another place in order to find objects. He has a gift; he can find anything no matter what. I picked up this book on whim one day at the library. I couldnt put this book down. Its an exciting adventure that doesnt stop, and there is a surprise ending that I never saw coming. The nightside has a sort of matrix feel to it, but dont worry it isnt a copy cat. Its a short read, about 230 pages, but well worth it. I have already started on the next book in the series and plan on continuing from there.

Oral History is the Best Histroy by ashliew182 Pros: The book starts off with Iggy Pop who is known of the creator of punk.
Cons: This book provides a limited history of punk and can get very boring at times. The cover and title of this book crasped my attention right away. This book is for underage kids discovering punk and punk veterans

alike. This is one of the many books that has attempted to stamp a time a place on punk begins & history which can't be done. This oral history of punk rock is not the best I have read but I enjoyed reading it and may read it again. This book can get boring at times because of the fact that they left out so much musically and globally. |

OMG Worst Children's Book in History!!! by thetruthofgod Pros: thick enough for the short leg on my kitchen table. Doesn't wobble any more! Yeah!
Cons: Not going to even try, only have 15 words to use. This travesty is published by a vanity press, you know, the place people with no talent and a hugely overblown sense of self importance go to publish their "great works". I like to call it masturbatory publishing. Why? No legit publishing house on Earth would put this thing out.

Sorry, don't want to be mean, but geeze! The "author" had to pay to get this juvenile (no, not the appropriate good kind of juvenile) work published. My six year old could write a more original, coherent, entertaining story and he's in special ed. I can not believe this came out of the mind of a fully functional adult. I read that the "illustrator" was an art student. CLOSE THAT ART SCHOOL NOW. Clearly they would admit anyone. Again, my six year old could give her a run for her money. I should have looked more closely at the cover before wasting 10 bucks. I could have bought a couple of fleet enemas with that money AND had a more pleasant experience. Consider this the "Plan 9 From Outer Space" of children's books. No, wait, strike that! Plan 9 was at least unintentionally entertaining, this is just sad, sad, sad. |
