Borner V-Slicer Mandoline - An Info-mercial Product Truly Worth Buying!

by elainehn Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Mar 19 '02
Pros: Super SHARP slicing blade, quick, easy & convenient to use
Cons: Super SHARP slicing blade (OUCH!), limited slice thickness range
Any way you slice it the Borner (also spelled Boerner) V-Slicer Plus Mandoline is a FANTASTIC kitchen gadget ...though it's so useful I hate the negative connotation of the word 'gadget' when describing this useful manual kitchen slicer.

by angelwings724 angelwings724 is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Home and Garden, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200, Apr 01 '03
Pros: makes perfect slices
Cons: very sharp
My Borner V-Slicer has made my job in the kitchen so much easier. I used to hate cooking anything that required chopping, dicing, slicing, etc. Then I found the V-Slicer. The Mandoline is about 14" in length and 6" in diameter. The ...

Cuts a sweet potato like butter!

by leylowe , Feb 21 '04
Pros: super sharp, easy to assemble and use
Cons: none, as long as you keep blades protected
My 17-month old daughter has decided that the only vegetables she will eat are green beans, carrots, and corn. Now, compared to some children, that's pretty good, but I'd like her to enjoy a larger variety of vegetables. I read a recipe recently for ...

Indispensable!

by laumas , Apr 17 '04
Pros: Fast, easy, compact. If you eat salads, this unit will be your best friend.
Cons: Doesn't cut soft items like cheese, hard eggs, and soft tomatoes well.
I use this item daily. I am on my third unit since 1990. The last two (the one I currently purchased and it's predecessor) are the Born model. I am not sure if the original one I purchased was the same maker, but the parts look the same. It is the idea ...

The V-slicer is a very good machine

by christa17 , Nov 16 '02
Pros: Much faster and more accurate than a knife for slicing and julienning
Cons: SHARP exposed blade
I happened upon a v-slicer in a thrift shop 10 years ago, and picked it up for $2.00. Since then, the V-slicer has been INDISPENSABLE in my kitchen. I use it at least every other day and the blade's just as sharp as ever. I especially like dicing onions...

Indespensible Kitchen Tool

by Rubatoguy , Apr 13 '02
Pros: As good as mandolines 5 times its price
Cons: Does not have a waffle blade
When I first looked at the V-Slicer, I thought, no-way could this work as well as the "professional" mandolines. After all, it was plastic and about one-fifth the price.

Once I tried it, I was impressed. The V-slicer works well, and it has...

Brilliant Design- Sharpest Knives Ever!

by gilanderika , Sep 08 '07
Pros: Better blades than even "professional" mandolines. Groove to rest on any bowl- very convenient!
Cons: Plastic can melt if too close to heat sources.
My husband just gave this mandoline to me for my birthday last week, although I really wanted the MIU France fancy stainless steel (and more expensive) one. But I tried it out, and it sliced like a dream! So I got past the fact that it was white ...

The Borner slicer

by aninalos , Sep 20 '05
Pros: A very speedy cutter versatile too
Cons: A danger in the wrong hands and the metal rods that come out.
I bought one of these over a year ago. It's very efficient and I can cut things with it faster than I can by hand, and I am a professional hotelier/restaurateur. The only fault I have found is that the five metal rods in the handle part can come out ...

Very pleased
by minco281 ,Dec 03 '06
Pros: easy to use, great storage container, easy clean up
Cons: so far, none
I needed a good slicer so I did my homework on the computer to find the best I could for the least money. This slicer had the best reviews so I got one this past week. I have used it for nearly every meal since. I love it. How did I get along without it? I don't dread the onions and spliced apples now. Makes great french fried potatoes. Of course I can't give a long term review on it but for the money I don't see how you can go wrong.

Mine lasted nine years
by wolfrick ,Jun 03 '06
Pros: Very sharp stainless steel blades. Very useful with dehydrator. Easy to clean
Cons: Very sharp tool, demands full attention Very hard to resharpen Plastic construction eventually failed
I received one of these as a gift in 1995, and at first I didn't think I'd use it. But soon I discovered that I was using it for more and more things.
When I got an Excalibur dehydrator, I used it to slice fruits and vegetables for drying. The two really compliment each other.
I even used it to slice potatoes for french-fries.
I kept it hanging on a nail beside the sink, so cleanup was dead simple... rinse it under the sprayer and then hang it up in its carrier to drip-dry.
I loved this slicer, until it broke. In 2004.
And it's really not all that broken. The plastic strut that runs under the insert is broken loose from one side, causing the insert to hang too low and unevenly.
I could try to glue it, but I think that maybe after nine years I should retire it and get a new one.

Best kitchen tool
by romwell ,Sep 27 '06
Pros: Very sharp blade. Makes cutting fast.
Cons: Very sharp blade ! Always use the safety handle.
My parents got one of those in Ukraine back in 200?. We've been using it for more than 3 years, and before that we've been using one for more than 4 years; bought a new one because we moved to the US. Now I started to cook and found out that I actually need it ! It saves ridiculous amounts of time. Slices any vegetable in seconds.

Borner V Slicer
by karysma ,Jul 06 '07
Pros: Long lasting sharpness, ease of use and makes food prep easy!
Cons: extremely sharp, one must be careful!
I have had my V slicer for over two decades, this thing works GREAT and lasts forever. The blades are just as razor sharp as the day it was bought! I would recommend this to ANYONE as long as they were very careful while using it. It cuts fingers just as well as any vegetable.

It was made my cooking so much easier, made my food presentations very nice as well. Very uniform slices, great for making matchsticks of certain veggies and meats as well.

It's worth every cent!

Great Product
by easyguy14215 ,Jul 05 '07
Pros: Durable, versatile
Cons: watch your knuckles
I've had mine for about 15 years. It's worth the price if only for chopping onions. Great for celery too. For those people who find chopping tedious, or can't slice evenly, It's a great utensil
