Pros: Huge hard drive, cool backlight, easy to use Cons: VERY fragile, heavy compared to others
I purchased the nomad zen usb/firewire and it was exactly what i expected. I expected it to be bigger than an ipod and not as fancy. The first problem i noticed is that it is extremely slow to transfer songs with the usb (my computer doesn't have ...

Pros: Low price, Good features, lots of space Cons: Larger than the Ipod, Bad software and support
I bought this because i wanted the storage space and basic features of an ipod but i am too cheap to actually go out and buy an Ipod. The first thing to mention is that Creative labs has never had good software, i've owned three of their Mp3 players and ...

Pros: Small, sturdy, large amount of storage, great sound, easy to transfer files, great sound Cons: Navigation somewhat clunky, hard to shuffle all songs, small display, case not designed too well
For several months I've sat on my hands waiting for a player that was going to meet my needs. Since converting over to .wma files some time ago, that was a great consideration of course. Also, I wanted something small and a massive hard drive.

Major Dissapointment
by maxwell80 ,Mar 30 '05
Pros: Battery life, hard drive storage, and sound Cons: Broke after a month, bulky
I bought this Creative Zen as an alternative to the ipod . . . Big Mistake! It was great for a month because it had 13 hours of battery life, great sound, and 20gb of storage. One day I went to turn it on and it would not work. I tried to charge it but still nothing happened. Thankfully the customer service was great and they took it back. After that I went and bought an Ipod mini witch are now just $199. Another thing I didn't like about it was, it was very bulky.

Fantastic Value for 20 Gb!
by wayne_cramp ,Feb 24 '05
Pros: Inexpensive alternative to I-Pod, Smooth finish Cons: TERRIBLE software! User interface could be more friendly...
I may be a bit biased, but I purchased my Nomad Jukebox Zen from Ebay, and I only paid $110 for it. Seeing as how you can't touch a 20Gb player for under $200 normally, I jumped at it.
The unit itself is a bit on the heavy side, and I can't really use it while riding my bike, but that's what my Mini Disc player is for, right?
The casing is a smooth brushed aluminium and looks very stylish. The screen is a bit small, but it is fairly easy to see, and the backlighting is not harsh. My unit has the new USB 2.0 connection, so my transfers are very fast.
A few problems: the menus are somewhat non-intuitive, and the software packaged with this unit is complete garbage! Thanks God Creative put out the Nomad Explorer software which is easy to use.
All in all a good value for twice what I paid.

Pro Technician Owned for a year love it
by kirbyanderson ,Nov 14 '04
Pros: Price, storage capability holds 3000 songs at 320 bit rate Cons: user interface, no scroll back to previous song, no support for USB mass storage
Handy way to get your mp3s anywhere. Upgrade to Koss earbuds although the enclosed earbuds work fine. Add a $30 Belkin fm transmitter and you now have a 20gb capable car unit. Battery is replaceable, cost 35 on ebay. I have dropped it a few times with no problem, Havent had the earphone jack malfunction. Added Redhat software for downloading into player, but to be honest never even tried with Creative's play center. Good solid unit. Cons: erasing music while in use is a pain, unit WILL NOT act as a stand alone USB 2.0 mass storage device, meaning you can transfer music from it, but only using specialied software (such as redhat) Select button very small and not enough positive feedback. Bad user interface, just load up your favorites and let em play randomly. Battery life now running 7 hours
holds 3000 songs the top 100 from 1955 to 2003 is 4800 songs

This review for Zen NX 20GB
by vicnval ,Sep 24 '03
Pros: -Removable battery
-USB2
-Small size
-Lighting fast boot up time
-EAX Cons: -Could be cheaper
-Battery could last longer
-Could be smaller (this is really nitpicking)
I just got mine a couple of days ago. It's great! The sound quality has to be heard to be believed! All my mp3's are encoded at a 128 bitrate. I put just under 1000 tracks on mine, at about 2 second per track upload speed (and my pc is about 5 years old, with a USB2 card in it). I imagine that a current system would be faster. Coming from the world of Minidisc, I really appreciate the fast transfer speeds!! By the way, the Zen NX 20GB is bi-directional, it will transfer to PC as well, at the same speed! The Play Center software is very, very good! It allows you to tag your mp3's in batches, runs quickly on a relatively old pc (Celeron 366 megaherts, 260 megs RAM, Windows 2000), and is stable. Great, all around!

VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE - 2 BROKEN UNITS
by ibvoor ,Oct 27 '03
Pros: ONLY GOOD FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS Cons: 2 DIFFERENT CREATIVE MP3 PLAYERS BROKE IN SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE
NOMAD ZEN WAS OUR SECOND CREATIVE LABS MP3 PLAYER. OUR FIRST BROKE AFTER 6 MONTHS AND WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. WE JUST PURCHASED OUR NOMAD ZEN. THE SOUND QUALITY WAS GOOD USING UPGRADED SENNHEISER HEADPHONES. HOWEVER, THIS MP3 PLAYER JUST HAD A HARD DRIVE FAILURE,AFTER ONLY 4 MONTHS. IT IS NOW BROKEN. VERY BROKEN. CREATIVE UNABLE TO TROUBLESHOOT ON PHONE.
THEY ADVISED THAT 90 DAYS IS THEIR WARRANTY. ANYTHING BEYOND THAT IS A CHARGE TO SHIP AND FIX. I COMPLAINED THAT THIS WAS OUR 2ND CREATIVE PRODUCT THAT BROKE IN A VERY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. ALTHOUGH THE PERSON ON THE PHONE WAS SYMPATHETIC, THEY WERE UNABLE TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY THAT WOULD HAVE PROVIDED THE CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT WOULD ELEVATE THEM TO A GOOD COMPANY. THEY ARE NOT WORTHY OF MY BUSINESS. I WILL NEVER BUY CREATIVE AGAIN! BUYER BEWARE.....

only been 6 months and broke!
by jeffplease ,Oct 29 '03
Pros: worked good with windows, cheaper then ipod, thats it Cons: thickness, brokenness, buttons, warrenty
This thing is not that great at all, i knew I should of gotten the ipod. I got it about 6 months ago for my birthday, and it worked great but not as great as the apple did. FIrst off it is way bigger then the ipod (this was the old ipod to) like just that little bit of thickness really matters when its in your pocket. Ok yea but now it just won't work, cause it says "harddisk error". it wont let you re-format or anything. And now its junk cause creative only has a 3 month warrenty! thats sucks way bad. hopefully apples is a year warrenty. Just trust me on this one now cause i usually dont take the people on these reviews to serious. but just look way more into the ipod even if it is 100 more. just do itttt

Nomad Zen. A real mp3 player?
by nudgerwish ,Jul 16 '04
Pros: On Transfer - Song rename, Very Fast Transfer, Durable, Easy to Use Cons: Bit too Heavy, Battery only lasts 17 hours.
Oh, iPods. They're pretty, they work well, they weigh nothing. Perfect if you live inside a pillow. For those of us who actually move during the day, the Creative Zen is an MP3 player that is actually worth it's salt.
It's heavy. It's not too heavy, though. Once more, it's durable. You can drop it (should you want to) and it won't get damaged. The Creative Labs mp3 transfer software that is required on your computer is very well designed and doesn't really have any faults.

Beware!
by ryansmojo ,Oct 27 '03
Pros: Price, 20GB, Pretty Good Software. Cons: Size and Weight, Battery Life, Menu Buttons, and Slow Playback.
I bought this Player about 3 days ago and its already on its way back to the store. I purchased this Mp3 player because it seemed like the best bang for your buck, boy was I wrong. I was very disappointed with the size and weight of the player, hard to use menu buttons, slow playback, and battery life (about 4 hours).
On a side note, I have not tried the iPod because I hear that the battery last for only 2 years and is irreplaceable after that. So until something new comes out, Im hanging onto my cash.

by krush_dt3000 ,Mar 18 '03
This machine is awsome, the fact that i can store all 1600 songs from my comp and still have 11GB left for storage makes me feel like this purchase was well worth it. i also love how easy it is to categorize my music. Great MP3 player, i reccomend it to everyone.
