FictionWise is the best commercial eBook site. I do not normally make such sweeping statements, but in this case I feel it is justified.
FictionWise (http://www.fictionwise.com) sells science fiction, fantasy, horror, romance, and mystery...

Easy, convenient, inexpensive e-book purchase
by brmacke ,Dec 15 '03
Fictionwise is a distributor of e-books. Most books are deeply discounted. Also, most books are available in a variety of formats, depending on which system the reader uses. Their variety of books is massive, but leans heavily toward science fiction. Downloading is quick and, for me at least so far, free of any difficulty.
The Fictionwise payment system is a little confusing. One tends to wonder just which discounts apply to any specific purchase. Fortunately, the billing system figures in all applicable discounts, often to the delight of the purchaser.
E-books are particularly handy for folks who have to spend a lot of time waiting, like in airports, doctors' offices, the line at the department of motor vehicles, or the like. A reader fires up a Personal Digital Assistant and reads until the waiting is over.
