The idea of a flashlight that never needs batteries sparked my interest when I spotted the Excalibur Forever Flashlight in mail order catalog. I'm the type that usually waits until the last minute -- sometimes longer -- before replacing batteries, so ...

Wow...color me impressed. I just purchased the Forever II, and it has been improved. I timed it ten times, based on 30 seconds of shaking, and got a very reliable and respectable 11 minutes, plus or minus 20 seconds, of light each time. While I don't believe this light to be practical for a daily use tool, it is great for an emergency light or a camping/backpacking light. It's light weight, lack of batteries or bulb,(it uses an LED) and the fact that it is waterproof- and very tough- make it perfect for these applications.
Another thing I found impressive was it's storage capability. I shook it for 30 seconds, then put it away for 5 days. When I took it out and turned it on afterwards, it still delivered 11 minutes and 15 seconds of usable light! The original price, here in Alaska, was $40- I wouldn't pay that for it, personally. I did find it on sale for half that, though, which was much more reasonable. Batteries just don't last long in our winters, so for the arctic, in particular, I believe this to be an invaluable tool, and I highly recommend it!

This is a fun gadget. It also serves a purpose and is handy to have around "just in case" the "big" flashlight runs out of batteries. I have 3 of these and have them in handy places around the house. The only thing is the magnetic field around the light. It may erase tapes/disks/etc. or affect other items such as TV or computer. The light is a narrow beam but good. The light lasts less than 5 minutes, but a few minutes of shaking recharges it. Give it to your youngster and have him/her shake it for you! They will want one too. Anyway, it's cool for all sorts of activities. Camping, backyard games for the kids, car, boat, plane, farm, etc. etc. etc.....Would like to see more or brighter light. Multi LED's maybe? Enjoy!
