A standard for any student of early western philosophy by mrg715 ,Mar 16 '05
Pros: Excellent philosophic starting point, shows many of the basics of western philosophy Cons: Might be a tad hard on Plato's work.
This is a translation of the dialouges, and as such has a different character than other texts. Plato wrote the dialouges, mainly stories about Socrates, including the Apologia, and others that were eventually clearly his thoughts, like the Republic.
If you want to learn about 2 of the greatest greek philosophers, read this. Realize that alot of this is about Socrates, as the man himself didn't write anything in his lifetime, but Plato who was his student wrote many of his dialouges about Socrates. Either way if you want to start somewhere, this is an excellent book to start with.
