MAJOR Manufacturer's Defect, Broke Down before 1 year!

by cyberglobe , Jul 22 '06
Pros: compact, stackable
Cons: Manufacturer's Defect, longer drying, Cost, Poor Quality Parts
I would like to let others know about this dryer and a MAJOR manufacturer's defect in this product. We were moving into our new condominium and we had created a laundry closet to fit this unit into. We did not want to have this unit in the Kitchen as ...

Same major Defect, do not buy this unit.

by drglock , Jun 15 '08
Pros: Aesthetics
Cons: Long drying time, fire hazard due to over-heating on cheap bearings. Very light duty.
We have had our dryer (and washer stack unit) for just over a year now. We need it in the small condo we are in. Now that it is out of the warranty period, I am getting the same HORRID screeching sound from the failure of the bushing that many others ...

Same major defect - Beware!!!
by jo49 ,Oct 05 '06
Pros: compact size
Cons: major bearing problem
I have just had to repair this dryer. The parts alone cost more than $300 and the labor was nearly $200. There appears to be a manufacturer's defect with the main bearing causing metal on metal squealing and the whole bearing and drum to be replaced.

The dryer was only 18 months old and had only light use in a 2 person household. Totally unacceptable.

I feel that Maytag should be replacing the bearing in every one of these dryers before they cause major fires. Mine was replaced with the same type of bearing. Although the parts were covered under warranty the labor was not.

I do not have confidence in this dryer as I feel the same bearing was used in the repair and that it will ultimately become a fire hazard. This is totally unacceptable in an expensive dryer and the problem needs to be addressed.

Please write to Maytag if you have had the same problem.

OK for a small dryer
by ts3ts3 ,Feb 11 '07
Pros: It matches the washer, is very quiet, auto dry usually works well.
Cons: Sometimes auto-dry is confused by small loads, but a restart and it's OK.
Yes, it does take a long time to dry, but it the clothes are always dry when it is done. The only time I had to reload is for a blanket or something large that needs to be opened up and put back in to fully dry. I'm sure many dryers have this problem. With very small loads, it usually stops after just a few minutes. If I restart it, the dryer works fine and dries the load. I don't know what it's thinking the first time, but it's happy the second time. The door can be reversed, but the door on the washer does not, so there isn't much point. The pair was designed for the washer on the left, but my house was set up opposite. I have not experienced the bearing problem mentioned in other reviews, but time will tell on that one.

Doesn't dry
by ser822 ,Mar 16 '07
Pros: A dryer that doesn't dry doesn't have any pros.
Cons: Dryer doesn't dry. It simply does not do it's job.
I paid good money for this dryer, only to find out that it doesn't dry at all. It takes at least 2 cycles for the stuff to dry. Maytag won't do anything about it. The thing is not even a year old. DO NOT BUY THIS DRYER. And given Maytag's inability to admit they sold a defective product, I would advise not to buy Maytag either. Very disappointed.

A Dryer That Does Not Dry!
by georgegoen ,Sep 16 '05
Pros: compact,nice styling
Cons: takes too long, clothes get wrinkled
I bought this dryer to stack on top of the Maytag compact washer which fits into small spaces. My frustration with this unit began with the first load. It seems to take way too long to dry and the clothes come out a big wrinkled mess! I tried reducing the amount of clothes by half and the dryer still took over 1 1/2 hours to dry a half load!! And the clothes still came out wrinkled. Considering that the time to wash in the matching washer is one hour, a mere one load of clothes takes me over 3 hours to complete! This is completely unacceptable. The service tech from where I bought the machine has ordered a new thermostat to try and solve the problem, but I think that the machine is poorly designed and simply does not work. I requested to return the dryer (and washer) but my appliance dealer refused. Poor customer service and poorly functioning equipment has left me sorely disappointed and so frustrated that I'm considering trashing the dryer and starting all over despite the considerable financial loss.

OK...So Far
by twebbz ,May 18 '07
Pros: Compact size and stackable with companion washer.
Cons: Slow drying times. Small drum does not allow good tumbling.
I've owned this dryer and it's companion washer for about nine months and I have to say that it is convenient to use, has performed pretty well and has not needed service.

Of course, it's "GENTLE BREEZE" drying system makes for long drying times as it never gets as hot as other dryers. (Hopefully for energy efficiency) I've found that cleaning the lint filter half way through the cycle helps keep the air flowing at maximum. Since the drum is small, clothes cannot tumble as freely which adds to the overall drying time (and wrinkles) too.

Drying sheets is difficult because they ball up very quickly so every few minutes I have to stop the machine and pull them apart. (I'm sure all compact dryers have this problem.) This confuses the auto-timer so I just check on the sheets frequently until they are dry.

Other than these issues I'm pretty satisfied and it SEEMS TO BE a good quality machine. Knock on wood and I have my fingers crossed!

Unhappy
by renrag12345 ,Aug 14 '08
Pros: small formfactor
Cons: see review
I purchased a Maytag Dryer from Sears 4 years ago. After one year, the heating coil failed. Sears repaired the unit. The second year, the same part failed yet again. Sears replaced the part, but would not pay for the technician. In year three, the same part failed again. Sears would not service the machine and I had an independant repair it. It is now year four, and once agian the heating coil has failed. Sears will not service the machine. Maytag will not service the machine. I would not be writing this except that there is clearly a problem with the unit and neither company is willing to take responsibility for it. I have been a longtime customer of Sears, and this is my first experience with Maytag. I am terribly dissappointed by both companies, all I'm looking for is someone to see the big picture and acknowledge that there is an issue. No one seems willing to do that.

A Good Dryer
by splicedwdm ,Aug 07 '06
Pros: A good regular dryer.
Cons: Energy efficient drying takes time!
I have used this dryer for a while now, and have had no complains with the unit what-so-ever. I bought this product because it fit within the space restrictions of my condo. I love that this product has an auto dry feature - it always seems to be spot on with drying times. I do not hate anything about this product.

Worst Malibu Barbie sized washer/dryer I have ever used!
by housekitch ,Jan 03 '08
Pros: Pants and shirts come out without wrinkles on the wrinkle prevent feature.
Cons: Dryer takes forever, bearing is squeaking, a good lawsuit waiting to happen.
Made in Korea! Figures! Not American where the dryer would work in the first place like a good old top loader/full size dryer like Maytag, Whirlpool or Kenmore would. Drying time takes 1 hour for a good load, even more for towels. Squeeks from bad bearing. Matching washer doesn't clean well with HE soap even. My whites come out grey and drab. Switched to regular Tide powder, and they are white with a double rinse.

Sheets are a nightmare in this machine! And, how do you clean clothes with only a half of a bucket of water swishing through them? I noticed that blankets or towels do not get totally wet in this thing to clean. It sprinkles water on them and misses lots of places where dirt is. Energy needed for both units takes more than the traditional top loader and dryer.

I would love to scrap mine, or trade it in for a Whirlpool "Thin Twin" compact top loader/dryer which I had before. This is the worst washer/dryer set in Malibu Barbie size I have ever used!

horrible drying ability
by epiniond ,Oct 06 '05
Pros: stacks on washer
Cons: doesn't dry, takes forever, too expensive for how poorly it works
This dryer is a stackable that fits in to my townhomes nice, small laundry closet. I thought it would be way better than an all-in-one. The washer that goes with it works like a dream, but this thing is a piece of crap!

I put a load of cottons in the dryer, 3 hours later they weren't dry yet! I thought maybe the load was too big, so I put a small load of bike clothes in there... Lycra dries so fast, in Colorado it would dry in an hour or two hanging... Over an hour later they were still damp, I actually shut the dryer off and left them and they dried faster. I have no idea how this is possible.

I don't know what I'm going to do with it now, but for nearly $500 I'd hope for something better, I wouldn't pay $100 for how poorly this works... I don't see how it can be "energy efficient" if it has to run the entire day to get a load dry.

Pros: There is nothing good about this dryer. it does not dry the clothes.
Cons: It takes several cycles for the clothes to completely dry.
Don't waste your money on this dryer. it doesn't dry the clothes until the third cycle. why they are still selling it is a mystery.

SAME PROBLEM-BAD BUSHING SHAFT
by pablo111 ,Apr 18 '08
Pros: Small
Cons: Bad parts.
To all who wrote about problems with the plastic square on the back that holds the drum axle up (aka the Bushing Shaft Part#35001012). This is clearly a faulty part, which will keep failing. I asked my serviceman to speak to Maytag about it directly, which he did. He recommended that they do something about this, as he felt this part would keep failing. Maytag/Whirlpool said that I was the first to file a complaint (even though there are many complaints on the web). Until others call Maytag/Wirlpool and complain about this part, they said they're not going to take any action. So please, call Maytag, and if possible, have your service professional call them too.
