Nikon D80 Digital Camera with 18-135mm Lens

by artemis8 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Mar 31 '07
Pros: allows you to come up with exactly the shot you want easily
Cons: no mirror lock up, bundled software is worthless
We decided it was time to get a digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera, and after considerable research my husband decided on the Nikon D80. The camera set he purchased at Best Buy included an 18-135mm lens. We've owned the camera for almost 6 ...

On par or better than the competition

by kocho , Apr 30 '07
Pros: Compact body, bright and large viewfinder, easy to use, decent low-light performance
Cons: Matrix Metering *different* than other Nikons like D70s or D200
EDIT 7/13/2007. I've learned some more since I wrote this review, particularly in terms of noise performance of the current Nikon offerings. Most sites will show JPG noise performance out of camera in default settings. When compared this way, the best to ...

Great camera for novice and pro alike

by motorcop28 , May 31 '07
Pros: Long battery life, fast auto zoom, clear pics with kit lens
Cons: Eventually, photo imaging software needed to get the most out of your pictures.
I'll start of by stating that I am not a professional photographer, but more like a pro-hobbyist who enjoys photography. I am a father who wants to truly enjoy the "life" of the photos that I take. I am also a police detective who decided that the ...

Wonderful camera - worth every penny!

by arandjsmamaNew Member , Jun 25 '08
Pros: Sturdy, multiple settings, excellent quality photos
Cons: expensive
I have been avoiding digital cameras for years, always into film/developing, etc. I bought this camera because I have 2 small children who I wanted to capture every moment and not waste a bunch a film and developing costs, only to like one or two ...

Nikon D80 Digital Camera with 18-135mm Lens

by trigger1026 , Feb 20 '08
Pros: Great camera, awesome pictures, 10 megapixels, very versatile.
Cons: Expensive, lots of features to learn.
I purchased this camera/lens in October 2007. I must say that after reading the owners manual, I was more confused than I was before about the operation of the camera. After going through some basic camera classes, I am now very confident in the ...

Great for beginners

by gimme_mo , Apr 21 '08
Pros: Easy to use, great pictures, auto focus
Cons: At Very High ISO, pictures come out grainy, but which camera doesn't have that problem?
Nikon D80 Digital Camera Bundle, 04/13/2008 This camera is awesome. It is great for beginners if you are looking to move away from the compact digital cameras to the SLR. It is easy to use and the pictures are the best I've ever taken. It has ...

Nikon D80 18-70mm Zoom
by chakraphoton ,Feb 07 '07
Pros: Great results and impressive features. Impressive battery life
Cons: Images could be slightly sharper without having to apply external sharpening
A great camera. Low noise and excellent quality results from the 18-70mm zoom included as part of the kit. I can highly recommend this DSLR for serious amateurs or as an additional camera for professionals. I have been using this kit for a few months now on various assignments and it hasn't let me down once.

D80 w/18-135mm
by raneyck ,Jan 04 '07
Pros: Excellent manual control varied auto modes. A little heavy, but it feels good to me.
Cons: Poor lens quality. Camera doesn't seem to focus well either. Expensive for poor quality.
I bought the camera SEPT 27, 06 from Circuit City because it was available before a trip. I took about 900 photos in the 8 days and realized somewhere in the last few hundred shots, it would not focus very well. Finally, the lens was going crazy, the wave motor was struggling to find a focus point, but couldn't. Upon returning home, I returned the camera to the store and they verified that neither the camera or the lens would focus (with other lenses, etc...). They couldn't help me however and told me that I would have to deal with Nikon. OK, $60 to insure and ship it back, then when it returned a month later, I now have a refurbished Nikon and Lens. The camera still does not focus worth beans (tripod or not). I have point and shoot digital cameras that take more clearly focused pictures. I do like the manual capabilities of the camera and the night shots are incredible. Almost nil on blue fringe and amazing control of the exposure. I would not recommend this camera and lens combo.

D 80, six months on
by AndyTolman ,Jun 15 '07
Pros: fits in my hands excellent viewfinder good menus strong battery impressive pictures incredibly flexible
Cons: sometimes, too flexible SD card plastic kit lens mount no dust removal
After looking hard at the Canon Rebel XT, Olympus, and Sony offerings, including several hands-on sessions, I chose the Nikon as the best photographer's camera. It just feels right. It also takes remarkable pictures. The kit lens is quite good given reasonable light, and covers a wide range for travel or walking around. I really love the old 50 mm lens with this camera for indoor, available light shots: great for theater (with a tripod), and the auto ISO with a fast lens stops action with great clarity.

Pros: Long battery life, excellent picture quality, sturdy
Cons: Heavy and bulky.
I have had the D80 for nine months. I took it with me to Europe and used it every day for seven weeks.

Now I use it at least weekly.

I have had no problems with the camera.
The pictures look great. I no longer get the blurry images that I got with the cheaper digital cameras.
I save in the raw format and use picasa software.

The battery last through about 4000 pictures and charges in 20 minutes.

This was a worthwhile investment.

Nice solid SLR
by buelm ,Nov 29 '07
Pros: Great Pictures. Good battery life
Cons: Not much to complain about. Pricey for sure.
We bought ours from buydig.com after some research on gray market cameras that came in a couple hundred cheaper. We opted for the American Market which was $967 versus $600 and no warranty. I would rather have a warranty than risk spending hundreds for a gamble. Great camera. It takes some know how on the features, but still is user friendly. Get large SD cards because this one will fill anything less than 4GB up quickly. We got the 18-55MM package and will upgrade to a bigger lens as money permits. Yea, I know this one is for the 18-135mm, but if you are researching for an informed purchase, this still works.

Splendid Camera!
by curtiss_02 ,Jun 17 '07
Pros: Shutter Speed Is Amazing
Cons: Nothing Really.
This 10MP Digital SLR Camera Is Totally Worth It. Everything About It Is Yummy. The Depth Of Field Preview Button, Burst Mode, And The Shutter Speed Is Very Fast. Your Don't Have To Worry About Any Lag. What You See Is What You Get. There Are Also Many Different Lenses To Put On This Baby. From The 18-55MM to 18-200MM VR Lenses. The 18-200MM Is Probably The Best Deal.
