Olympus Stylus 400 looks and feels great. Picture quality sinks

by vincentjhv , Oct 30 '03
Pros: *Weather proof *size *looks good *controls are relatively easy to use.
Cons: *** Horrendous picture quality!! Returned camera after 2 weeks.
I own the same camera that uses regular film and I love it. I was looking for a digital camera, and it made sense to try the digital version. This camera's body is really nice. The size is great, and the weatherproof feature was a must for me (lots of ...

Solid camera...recommended

by sdallnct , Jan 04 '04
Pros: Compact, weather proof, sharp lens, good picture quality, good features
Cons: Uses xD cards, cannot use "regular" batteries as a back up, no manual controls.
Even though I’m very familiar with photography, I wanted a small, light weight camera for travel, party type pic’s, etc. All cameras in this general price range have their pros and cons, but since I have two of the Olympus Stylus film cameras, I ...

Olympus Works Great With Dell Dimension

by peter__ , Oct 03 '04
Pros: Flawless. Easy to use.
Cons: The Stylus 410 records audio...Stylus 400 is obsolete as a result.
A previous reviewer had some issue with Dell Dimension computers...works great on my system. Whatever the problem was there...it is NOT the brand of computer. Getting the camera working with the computer was a snap. The camera comes with a USB ...

Great Camera For the Money, Steady Hand Required

by kentmom , Apr 04 '04
Pros: Compact size, lightweight, delivers high-quality shots in high-res mode, easy to use
Cons: Steady hand required for sharp pictures; viewfinder is a bit smaller than I'd like.
I studied the market and analyzed several other cameras in this price range w/similar features before I bought this one...and I love it. It is very durable (I'm a klutz and have dropped it repeatedly, already!) and lightweight--a good combination for me. ...

Will Not Work With Dell Computer
by johnnyfever ,Mar 30 '04
Pros: Seems to be a nice camera.
Cons: Will not download the photos to my Dell Dimension computer.
I just bought this camera but can not get the pictures to load onto my Dell Dimension Desktop. The Dell computer refuses to recognize the Olympus as a hardware device. I am running Windows XP Pro with 256MB of Ram and a 40 gig hard drive. The support staff at Olympus said this sometimes happens with Dell Computers. I am extremely disappointed as this was my first foray into the world of digital photography. Sad to say I am going back to 35mm.

The Stylus 400 is stylish, small size, is easy to use and produces good results
by old_forester ,Dec 19 '03
Pros: Stylish, compact, weather resistant, easy to use and produces good digital images
Cons: Camedia 4.10 software doesn't provide for deletion of files from the medial card.
The small size of the Stylus 400 makes it easy to carry with me most of the time. Its weather resistance is ideal for the wet SE Alaska climate, and it has performed well under both wet and snowy conditions. It takes very good pictures, even in low light situations. Downloading the pictures to the computer has been a snap. The editing software isn't as easy to use as earlier Camedia versions, and doesn't allow selected files to be deleted from the media card. Like most digitals, a larger media card is a must, but after a little shopping I found a 256 Mb Olympus xD card that wasn't too expensive. With a second battery and the larger media card this little beauty is ready to go all day.

A little pricey, but worth it
by rhkennerly ,Sep 21 '03
Pros: all-weather, easy to remember (or work out) software command tree, good flash & controls
Cons: battery life, shutter lag noticeable.
Not my first digital camera, but I wish it had been (it's always the cheap man who pays the most).

Easy to tote around, weather proof and rugged, I carry it with me more than any camera I've ever owned. My Pentax SLR rig has been gathering dust since I bought the D400.

The layout of buttons & controls is intelligent and the software's command tree easy to remember (or puzzle out), even for occasional users. I don't think a camera or controls can get much smaller and be easy for a guy with big hands to use.

I opted for the D400 over the somewhat more compact Canon Elph (sp?) series because of the Olympus' better flash, stronger (farther reach) and more versatile settings.

The (optional) 256 MB xD card (all about the size of a quarter) stores 266 pix at resolutions suitable to print a 4 x 6 inch photo. The included 16 MB xD card stores about 20 pix at the same resolution (I think I see a pattern here). Included software a bit basic but easy to use, includes a USB cable for the computer.

Great pictures, not that easy to use
by lindajs ,Jul 01 '04
Pros: Takes fantastic pictures, vivid colors.
Cons: Instructions and ease of changing settings are poor.
Compact, small, very light and nice design. Was able to take it on several vacations. The place where the lithium battery is stored is right where you thumb hits while taking pictures and that opens the battery storage area easily so you need to be careful when taking pictures. Also it's not that great when using the flash indoors in low light. My Fuji 2.2 mega pixal was much easier to use.
