Pros: Design. Cons: Everything else.
This television is merely adequate. For the average consumer, this item might be great. But then again, you're not the average consumer, are you. First off, this set is only EDTV. For those of you who don't know what EDTV is and what the difference ...

One of the best around!
by pbw9 ,Aug 02 '05
Pros: Fluid movement, astounding colour/clarity, very sophisticated design and easy to use Cons: Only one HD input - Not a huge deal
The philips plasma is one of the bets as far as I'm concerned. Some people write reviews about product they obviously dont understand, maybe they were overpromised or something, I dont know.
When you use the HD Input on this, the clarity and fluid movement is ASTOUNDING. Yes if you use component input its not as good, and if you use S-video, its not as good, but thats why its called "High Definition Input" - thats what gives it high definition! The best, clearest signal to the tv, produces the cleanest most fluid movement.
I've compared this tv to Sony mainly and I feel that with sony you pay for the name, with philips you pay for quality.
Lastly, this has got to be the easiest technology to use. Everything from the formatting to Picture in Picture to the active control which constantly adjust to accoutn for changling light conditions in the room. They also include the wall mounts which have a retail value of over $600.
You can not go wrong with this plasma tv unless you are that type of person that nothing is ever good enough for you and you just like to complain.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Good plasma. Inputs suck
by rajulpatel ,Dec 29 '04
Pros: Great brightness, contrast. Cons: Inputs suck. Tech support is clueless.
Overall an excellent 42" HD plasma.
Only one set of HD component video. The DVI input port DOES NOT support HDCP. It can only be used for PCs ot video sources over DVI not protected by HDCP (rare to find now). I have verified this. Some online reviews fail to mention this.
Philips support is pathetic. They do not know anything about their own equipment. Took them 3 months to tell me the DVI port does not support HDCP.
I would not buy this plasma. I returned mine and will get something better from Costco. Their return policy is good in case I don't like the next one.

Slick, Sleek and Good Picture
by vmrchitect ,Nov 07 '04
Pros: Sleek design, best over-all picture (in non high definition mode) Cons: Needs separate receiver box (included).
Sleek modern design with the best picture in its class. Light weight in comparison with many features that include wall mount and floor stand. Best plasma that eliminates most haze and screen door effect even compared to sets costing 5-6 thousand dollars.

Repeated Problems
by sourceburn ,Apr 27 '06
Pros: None. It requires a separate tuner to watch TV broadcasts, which costs around $750. Cons: Too many problems for such an expensive television monitor, and their customer support is worthless.
I have owned this model since 2002 (purchased at Best Buy shortly after they came out), and have had nothing but problems with it. The unit has been warrantied twice, with the entire screen being replaced both times, and the power unit replaced the second time. It is now suffering from power problems and is not turning on at all. It has always been connected to a quality surge protector. After numerous attempts to resolve this issue through their customer service, I was told that they would not help with any repair work, not even sharing the expense of parts and labor, despite the history of problems with this unit. I would not recommend a Philips television, and will never buy another Philips component again. Besides, for the money, other brands offer better picture and processing/features.
