Northville Michigan Planet Fitness USED to be a nice gym

by fitboy , Jul 21 '07
Pros: Cheap. New equipment. Generally clean.
Cons: Clientele. Tiny weight room. Not welcoming to people who are serious about their fitness.

Cons: None at all for the price.
** 10/15/07 Edit - To clarify, I am referring to the Whitehall Planet Fitness in Charlotte, NC. This particular gym is in a sizable office park and was built new as a Planet Fitness - it was not a Gold's gym prior. I am currently on the $10, no contract, ...

Pros: Clean Facility. Cheap in price.
Cons: Cheap quality. Lightweight machines. Staff not knowledgeable or polite. Nothing beyond the absolute minimums.

Pros: Cheap - $10 for one location, $20 if you want to use all three.
Cons: Too JUDGEMENTAL,stupid dress code, not enough equipment, non-motivating atmosphere.
My World Gym in Colorado Springs became a Planet Fitness on July 1 - the whole thing was kept a secret until the Saturday prior to the changeover. I read the reviews on this site, so I was somewhat prepared for what I was going to encounter - but words ...

Pros: Inexpensive.
Cons: Focus on high volume/no service memberships, poor attitude toward good fitness and fitness goals.

Cons: At least 1 gym has called the police to remove a grunter (prison guard)

Does what it Says
by tigurbaby ,Apr 25 '05
Pros: Clean, friendly management, great pricing, no contracts, plenty of equipment.
Cons: Many members don't know what they're doing or aren't serious.
The whole appeal of Planet Fitness is that it is a gym for average people who don't make working out their lives. If you're serious about working out and want to be surrounded by people who are bodybuilders, this isn't the gym for you (and it never claims to be.) Their motto is that they are a judge free zone which takes the pressure off for people who want to join a gym but haven't been to one before or aren't in shape. As said, its not a pick up joint or a beauty contest, just a place to go to run on treadmills while watching T.V. The facility I've been to is well kept, clean, has over $200,000 worth of equipment so there is no waiting, and the price ($10 a month, $20 startup in my area) is phenomenal. They also included a juice bar that will make shakes with any ingredients you can think of, with scoops of any suppliments you want. Overall, great for beginners or those that are hoping to be in shape but not bodybuilders.

Disappointed in Florida with Planet Fitness
by heatherzinfl ,Jun 19 '07
Pros: Lots of treadmills, one friendly staff member. Cost. Hours.
Cons: Equipment removal, staff ringing lunk alarm unnecessarily management does not care or encourage member feedback.
Planet Fitness took over World Gym in Palm Harbor, FL. At first it seemed to be a good concept, no grunting, no slamming/dropping weights, etc. Now the staff has taken things too far, just the other day, two gentlemen were laughing in the gym and the gal at the front desk sounded the "lunk alarm" at them for laughing. As one of the gentlemen was leaving, the front desk gal made a snide comment to him - end result - he cancelled his membership that day. Now they have removed the squat rack, a few other leg machines, and the bars which enabled members to do pull-ups and hanging leg raises. Reason? These pieces were "intimidating" to their target member. No judgements? Yeah right.

planet fitness white plains, ny disappointment
by gym_fanatic ,Jan 20 '05
Pros: Clean, equipment is in very good condition.
Cons: Have to wait for machines, benches, no decline bench, missing a lot of necessary equipment.
This gym used to be Golds Gym when I joined several years ago. Several months ago they just changed to planet fitness. The gym now stinks. There are so many more people and so much less equipment. Everyday I went, through the course of a little over a week, some other pieces of equipment were removed. There is like 4 benches with about 10-12 people waiting to use them. There is NO DECLINE BENCH...what the hell is with that? Dumbells only go up to 70lbs. and 9/10 people there are disgusting to look at. When is used to be Golds Gym, 7/10 people looked good, it pumped you up and got you really working out. Now, you walk in and it completely unmotivational. There are a lot of people who go there who aren't serious about working out, and I'm not even a hardcore bodybuilder...just an average joe. They physically threw out bodybuilders because they said that "this isn't a gym for people like you."

Planet Rudeness Dorchester
by irishrich ,Nov 22 '06
Pros: Cheap Monthly Fees
Cons: Way over Capacity, rude management
Since becoming Planet Fitness (formally Worlds Gym) They have reduced Weights and benches, increased membership Wayyy beyond capacity and hired a Manager that is a complete ignoramus. If one dares ask a question or report defective equipment. The usual response is "leave" . It seems the two owners have completely abandoned their membership base and chased after this new business model. It may work initially, But Planet Fitness is already starting to obtain a bad reputation.

We love Planet Fitness
by jsmi ,Jan 15 '07
Pros: Great atmosphere, clean, tons of machines, wonderful staff.
Cons: none
I have been very happy with Planet Fitness. I was happy to hear that I was not having to pay higher prices for a lot of services that I had no use for. I never liked working out next to the "grunters."
Finally, a gym for "the rest of us." If you want to grunt, slam weights and leave your puddle of sweat on a machine for the next unfortunate soul, then go to Golds Gym."

This Planet in Columbus is Overpopulated!
by chowds ,Feb 27 '07
Pros: none
Cons: Unbelievable crush of humanity
Want to work out? Run on a treadmill or use a piece of aerobics equipment? Well the Planet Fitness in Columbus OH is not for you. If you like standing in line to get a machine then head on down there and sign up.

They advertise over 70 pieces of aerobics equipment. And if you like to work out between the hours of 4-7 p.m. weekdays, about 69 of those will be taken and one will be broken. As you stand in a line 5 deep be sure to check out the staff as they continue to sign up more people.

I've worked out at this gym for over 10 years (it was a Gold's before) and at no time have I ever seen such a huge amount of people there. You literally cannot get a machine. It's unadulterated greed on the owner's part. I've started looking for a new gym. If you are considering a gym, be sure to skip this one.

Just say no!
by powerciser5454 ,Jan 30 '07
Pros: None
Cons: Crowded, hot, stuffy, rude, broken equipment, dirty locker rooms.
You get nothing for your money. The cardio equipment is always taken. There is never any staff except for a senior citizen at the front desk. This is obviously an attempt to sign up as many people as possible with no intention of providing service.

I like my Planet Fitness!
by mariejessie ,Feb 03 '05
Pros: Comfortable setting, good location, lots of equipment, equipment in good shape
Cons: Need to know how to use equipment, or pay a trainer; no other support.
I'm an average person who always felt insecure at those muscle head gyms. My planet fitness in Shelton, Connecticut is a decent place where I can go, do my workout, and not worry that I'm a 40-something with a few extra pounds. The facility has lots of equipment, I hardly ever wait for it, and everything is in great shape. I'm happy with the price too - especially compared with the other gyms in this area!

Orange, CT has gone DOWN !!!
by ruotols ,Sep 08 '05
Pros: $10 a month
Cons: No more free weights
A great concept until they took away all the dumbbells over 80lbs and all the fixed barbells over 60lbs. They have 2 benches and no incline or decline. NO ONE is allowed to take the Olympic bars and use them for GOD FORBID curling...

The place was great when it was just plain old World Gym with a new name....

Go to Mike Katz's place in Branford... I use to be a member back in the 80's and I am going back home...!

Hard to cancel membership
by livewire561 ,Jun 26 '08
Pros: Cheap
Cons: Cheap because they SCAM people
My dumb a** got scammed here. I had to jump through a million hoops to cancel, and apparently forgot one. You can only cancel by mailing them, but it HAS TO BE CERTIFIED. I sent a plain old cancellation letter, thought I was finished, and FOUR YEARS LATER get a bill for $1000. 47 continuous months of service, with no notifications/bills sent to me in the interim period, I wasn't using the gym and I thought my membership was complete. I lived at the same address the whole time. Then, out of the blue, a bill for a grand.

Also, the bill was not from PF but a collection agency. Not only is that a godawful amount of money for a poor college student, it goes against my credit. I was ignorant, don't you be as well.

Not Judgement Free
by jmurphy2006 ,May 03 '06
Pros: Cheap, you get what you pay for.
Cons: The list would be too long.
Completely disgusted with this organization.
Gym has steadily gone down hill since Planet Fitness acquired it from World Gym. No classes, former employees left within a short time frame, and the steady removal of equipment(no dumbells over 60#).
The new discriminatory dress code finished me off.
No Do-Rags
No Bandanas
No Ski Hats
No Jeans
No Boots
No Tank Tops(Men)
I terminated my membership this morning and joined Golds Gym.

It's going downhill fast (WEYMOUTH)
by buzz781 ,Apr 15 '07
Pros: Cheap at $10-$19.99 a month, lots of cardio & workout machines. Free tanning.
Cons: Dirty, parking space limit, no daycare, no steamroom.
I belonged to Golds in Braintree for awhile - thought it was a good gym, clean, but lots of attitude. I joined Worlds Gym, liked it for awhile until it became Planet Fitness and started noticing everything from the juice bar, to the steamroom going away (things I like in a gym). The place is dirty, there's a much younger crowd (more teenagers) and the place is not kept up. The paper dispensers are always empty (for wiping down machines), the water fridge is not stalked, and the help just sits behind the counter. I think I wouldn't care much about the paper towel thing - however, I sweat and want to be courteous to others using equipment after me. Plus, I notice things like guys not washing their hands (a lot) after going the bathroom. The staff is mainly female, and they do not seem that knowledgeble about the machines. I guess you get what you pay for.

Crowded and dirty
by maryk289 ,Aug 22 '07
Pros: None at all.
Cons: Dirty, crowded, smelly, equipment jammed together.
I recently joined the Planet Fitness in Aston, PA. It has only been open for 3 months. I was not offered a tour of the club first, just handed a contract. I joined but during my first work out was appalled at the conditions. There were paper towels and lint all over the floors. The locker room was dirty, paper towels, toilet tissue, etc. all over the place. The toilet was filthy. I was using a treadmill and the dirt and sweat was everywhere. The treadmills are so close together that it is very hot, stuffy, and smelly in the cardio area. This is a new gym, just imagine after a year or so!

I asked the guy at the front desk for some quick help using one of the machines. he said that he was not permitted to do that. He said I would have to sign up for personal training! No one is around to answer even the easiest of questions.

The price is cheap but really the place is worthless. I don't understand their ideas for running a gym. I have never seen anything like it in my 20 years of working out.

PF Albuquerque: Great for average Joe/Jane
by acroos ,Apr 17 '09
Pros: Convenient hours, clean facility, friendly staff and owner, great value
Cons: Not for 'serious' bodybuilders, not a 'pick-up' joint
It's really too bad that people have had such bad experiences. I'm not a fan of gyms with expensive monthly membership fees for a pool I'll never use and classes that aren't convenient to my schedule. There are at least two in this area that if you're a member of them, you're in the 'in crowd'. That's why I chose PF - I want to get a good workout and be left alone. Don't expect all the frills here. If you're truly looking to exercise, this is the place to go. If you want to socialize, find somewhere else. I've never had a problem with the owner or staff here; they're always courteous, helpful, and friendly. Good gym for those of us who are average people trying to get in a little better shape, not prep for Mr. or Ms. Olympia.

The worst gym I have ever seen!
by kriscarter ,Jul 04 '07
Pros: None
Cons: Filthy, crowded, foul odor, bad staff, hard to cancel.
I have been a member of at least 15 gyms all over the US. Planet Fitness is by far the worst. It is dirty and over crowded. The staff has no ability to help customers. The locker rooms are gross. We tried the one in Malvern, PA. And we tried one in Florida. Both were horrible. When we tried to cancel, we were told to see the manager, who can not be found. So we canceled our credit card, it was easier. Do not join these gyms!

Planet Fitness / Image 2000 Health Spa
by jav102 ,Aug 18 '05
Pros: Declining to sign up that instant caused them to drastically lower the payments.
Cons: Felt very pressured to enroll and the equipment wasn't that "state-of-the-art".
There is no good that I can write of this gym. First off, we were told that they needed to take our handbags before given a tour. Second, they labeled their "Pitch Book" as "B*tch Book"...makes you think how they look at their clientel. Lastly, though told numerous times we needed to go home and think about our options, they kept pushing and pressuring for us to sign up that day. All they want is your money.

SAY NO THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE
by jewelergirl ,Jun 03 '08
Pros: THERE ARE NONE!!!!!!!!!
Cons: Everything, overcharging, rude staff, crazy rules
All i have to say is if you care about your money do not sign up at this gym!!!! The staff and management do not know what they are doing and they dont listen at all. I have had my bill messed up several times by these incompetent people. My bill was supposed to be 20 dollars a month and they keep overcharging me. First i was overcharged 10 dollars and then 30 dollars. When i tried to get my money back no one ever called me back and it took months to get my money. I still havent got my 30 dollars back!! Not only that but my relative left that gym because management yelled at him numerous times for apparently dropping the weight down too hard. I dont know how they think a weight should be put down but its not that easy to place it down quietly???. This place is somewhere people should go only if they want to get ripped off and have a lot of stress and an unpleasant time. Customer service is definently not a concern. Maybe they should hire people with an IQ greater than 0.

Cons: The rules are ridiculous. It's not just the no grunting stuff.
Just canceled my membership after six months because the staff interrupted my routine to tell me I was using the machines out of order. They demanded that I work from one end of the row to the other and not skip. I have been working out in the same routine for months and out of the blue.

Something is really fishy about an outfit that won't accept my cash for a whole year membership!  I have had enough problems with businesses debiting my bank accounts and not being able to make them stop when I quit.  Are they not wanting to take the chance of not being able to screw me out of some extra money or what?

Planet Fitness A True Judgment Zone
by probp ,Aug 22 '07
Pros: Great Price
Cons: Ultra Hypocritical
I was at a Planet fitness today and let out a small grunt on my last rep of my 3rd set of squats. The manager comes flying out of her office and warns me if that happens again she will turn the lunk alarm on. Planet Fitness is the Judgment free zone (Right) I think it's funny that anything to do with heavy lifting or body building they have done away with but women are allowed to parade around in tiny outfits. I don't know about you but there is some great hypocrisy in this fact.

Judgment free yes like most of the world as long as you believe like they do.

Contract compliance- Not the same everywhere. Rude Staff
by hd100jd ,Oct 14 '09
Pros: Local  PF facilities in Wilmington NC area are professional and clean.
Cons: PFclubs at (Langhorne Pa.) have extremely rude staff who haven't a clue about customer service.
Bought PF black membership to use locally in Wilmington NC and also to use while traveling to other regions of the country. Was told that you can use the membership anywhere in the country and bring guest with the black membership. This was true in some cases but not true in all cases. Langhorne Pa. (the rudest staff I've ever encountered) denied any accompaning guest. So buyer beware don't expect the welcoming treatment at all facilities. Especially in Langhorne Pa.

Planet Fitness does not support military members
by revolver1978 ,Sep 15 '09
Pros: Treadmills are nice, price is cheap.
Cons: Staff SUX, machines suck, and the purple and yellow colors everywhere is nauseating.
Twice I went on active duty for training, and twice I was told my account would be frozen until my return. Even after I furnished them with copies of my orders, they charged me for the time I was gone, and also added late fees.
Then, I had to have major surgery. I furnished them with a doctor's note, explaining that I would not be able to work out for several months. They made a copy of the note, and continued to charge me for this time period as well, adding insult to injury by harrassing me with phone calls, demanding payment for the periods of time when my account was supposed to be "FROZEN."
The manager at the location was not helpful basically acted like he didn't care, even though HE was the one who was supposed to freeze my account. HE was the one I gave all my paperwork to as well.

Pros: Overall a good place to work out and meet people (please see Cons section too)
Cons: When the manager is not around, the music volume is very high and uncomfortable.

Overall a good place to work out and meet people. However, some people have noticed that at times the music volume level, on the weekends when the manager is not around, is high and uncomfortable. In fact, I know people who have left because of that.

Nevertheless, should they bring that shortcoming under control, overall it is a good place to work out.

Ellicott City: Why did they let it get so filthy?
by sunny_morning ,Feb 18 '08
Pros: Cheap, not crowded.
Cons: Filthy and sadly with no prospects of getting any cleaner. Falling into disrepair.
The gym is cheap and never over-crowded. Everything was brand new a year ago, working and in order. They had great staff members, but now all I ever see are ambivalent teenagers who do nothing but sit behind the front desk and surf the Internet. Consequently the gym has gotten filthy.

The patrons do their part. After the MRSA scare last year the gym implemented an equipment wipe down policy and almost EVERYONE follows it. The seats and handles of all the equipment are gleaming. But even while the patrons pitch in, the staff and management refuse to do their part. There is dust and grime under and around all of the machines. . Why can't they spend a few hours with a bucket of hot soapy water and clean this place? It wouldn't take long and it would make for an enormously improved gym experience for everyone.

The water fountain leaks and is about to fall off the wall. I have suggested they call a plumber, but I guess that’s too much of an expense and they plan to wait until it’s actually on the floor.

Does anybody read what they're signing?
by kateytwentyNew Member ,Nov 15 '09
Pros: Clean equipment, clean tanning beds, good hours, never a wait for equipment.
Cons: An obnoxious "in crowd" of members in the early A.M.
Everyone seems to be complaining about all these "undisclosed" charges.  ALL PF members get charged an annual fee on October 1.  It was explained to me when I signed up but even if it wasn't it's IN THE CONTRACT!  The Malvern PA gym has people who clean it constantly, know everyone by sight, handle problems quickly, and at least when I signed up they explained every little thing to me.  There is a new PF that is also near my house and I don't like it nearly as much.  The staff ignores you and they don't know the answers to questions.  I guess PF is a franchise so it depends on who owns the gym you go to and who works there.  I suggest you ask a lot of questions, don't sign anything you don't understand, and if you have a problem don't assume PF is at fault.  Most of the problems I've seen on this site are problems that were caused by people not understanding their contract and not understanding what type of a gym PF is.  It's not for everybody but it's great for an awful lot of people.

The COLUMBUS Planet Fitness is DIRTY
by bluntbetty ,Oct 14 '07
Pros: Cheap
Cons: Dirty, Rude management
I've worked out at this gym for 7 years now. I've noticed that there has been an increase in DIRT all over the walls and machines every since the gym switched from Gold's to PF. I actually approached the manager regarding the cleanliness of the club. In one of the stretching rooms, it is so dirty in there that I start having an allergic reaction when I'm in there. The wall is SOILED with DIRT. When I asked management regarding this room, the response was "I've tried painting the wall 2-3 times." I'm not sure if washing the wall was ever considered. Furthermore, some of the cardio machines have dirt and crime all over them. They look like they haven't been cleaned in at least a year. The manager told me they clean more than ever because membership up. He did not offer to look at the areas I pointed out nor did he offer any other solution. He was down right degrading and rude. I cancelled my membership the next day. It's cheap - but do you really want to get a staph infection or other disease from this FILTHY CLUB?

Just say no!
by wantsquatrack ,May 12 '08
Pros: Absolutly nothing
Cons: The whole place is a con!
I first became a member of planet fitness because of the resonable price, I figured I could deal with the no grunting, no do rags no gallon water jugs and the stupid lunk alarm because the price was exceptional, but they recently took out the squat racks! In my opinion that is the dumbest thing I've ever seen! They claim to be the "judgement free zone" yet they judge anyone who wants to improve on strength or athletic ability. When I asked the manager where I could file a complaint he stated that I could go to the website, that was a bold face lie! There is no were to file a complaint and no phone number to reach corporate. Another thing their trainers are a joke, how do I know I am a certified trainer myself and personally I would'nt let them train my dog to poop outside! The only thing I have left to say is Boycott Planet fitness!

Planet Fitness Corporate Phone Number, Credit Card Fraud
by decaf2go ,Dec 10 '08
Pros: Very cheap.
Cons: Wildly irresponsible management of credit card numbers. Identity theft anyone?
Call Them! 603-516-0360

This club is everything it says it is, and less, and more.  There are few judgements made, no one stands over you, and the price is cheap.

The equipment is also cheap, and there is a personal trainer soliciting your business all the time.  They'll tell you that you're using the equipment incorrectly, but to learn the right way, there is a price.

My biggest issue with Planet Fitness is a corporate policy encouraging them to keep a written copy of all credit card numbers and authorized signatures.  Yes, you read that correctly.  They do not care that it is illegal.  Each and every one of the 256 locations has hundreds, and sometimes thousands of credit card numbers just waiting to be compromised.  They are also not PCI DSS compliant in their computer software, making it possible for all of the mag stripe date from every card swiped there to be hacked.  Remember TJ Maxx?  You'd think these people would learn!

C- For Planet Fitness
by nickname4 ,Mar 04 '08
Pros: price, location
Cons: poor equipment that's often broken leading to long waits.
Planet Fitness in Lutherville Maryland. For $10/month its worth the aggravation. I give the place an overall C-. The equipment is in marginal shape and what they do have is often out of order. At least 20% to 30% of the treadmills either don't work at all or the audio is defective. Of the remaining, it's not usual for a treadmill to work with some defects. The other equipment and free weights are marginal as well. The personnel are reasonably friendly and understand the problems but it seems they have no authority for the care and maintenance of the equipment. It's also getting crowded. Fortunately the "Fox News" hounds are at a minimum (unlike the Merritt Athletic Club in Cockeysville which is essentially run by Fox). I'm staying for now but if the membership fee goes up to $11/month I'll probably leave.

Great Gym!! Great deal, great locations,
by susan127 ,Feb 02 '08
Pros: cheap,clean,nice people there,plenty of room to work-out, no crowds,good hours,good people
Cons: none, no frills, but who needs them
I was delighted by this gym! I've been working out since the 1980's and this is a great place to work-out. Before this health club I was coming from a more expensive one that charged $57 a month. Planet Fitness had a cleaner women's locker room and the people were more down to earth. I also found the desk people nice as well. There are no classes, but I don't take classes anyway. For $10 a month you can not beat it. As for the grunting rule, I am fine with that, after all, I'm not Hulk Hogan. If you are like that then you should probably stay at Golds. If your looking for just a basic gym with no frills, its perfect. I believe they do offer personal trainers for those who need it.

Pros: Lots of Equipment, Can't beat the price
Cons: Could use a few more workout bikes.
Planet Fitness is for ordinary folks like my wife and myself who just wish to work out. I like all the cardio equipment and treadmills. We love the numerous workout machines and nautilus equipment. It's very friendly and a very easy going atmosphere. After 4 years at the YMCA battling lack of parking, too few pieces of equipment and rude patrons, I am finding this to be a breath of fresh air. However, this is not for the serious body builders. You guys either need the Y, Balley's, or Golds Gym. The 19.99 per month price cannot be beat and I'm able to use any other Planet Fitness location up to 10 times monthly. How Great is that?

Planet Fitness Ypsilanti, Michigan
by wileyina2 ,Mar 02 '08
Pros: A bit cheaper
Cons: Rude employees, lame sales pitch, hidden fees
Dropped in to get some information about joining. The manager gave me a lame tour and then started pressuring me to join. I saw some machine types I hadn't used before, so I asked if I could try them out. The manager told me I had to pay $20 first. $20 bucks to sit on a machine! I guess he was thinking I was trying to squeeze in a free set. So much for the "judgment free zone". He wanted me to buy a daily pass to sit on one lousy machine.

"A gym is a gym, come on, you've been to a gym before..."

Those were his last words to me as I walked out the door.

Pay a few extra bucks and join another fitness club in the area. There are plenty. With this kind of horrible customer service; this joint won't be around long...

Pros: cheap, clean, nice guys working there. I have made several good friends there.
Cons: don't like workers being too social with the clients.  It's their job to help.r
I joined in March. The staff is cool for the most part but Rick can be handful at times. The trainer is cool and knows his stuff. The other guys who work there are ok as well. I have not encountered any of the problem some say they have. The place has a full time cleaner walking around and cleaning all day. It does get crowded at night with all the 20 somethings but I go during the morning. For the money you can't beat it. I got trined and now use 17 machines on my own plus cardio. If you know how to act you can accomplish alot. many of the people are into healthy living and sharing tips. I find it a trouble free place to work out for hours at a time.

Cons: to many to write
unbelievable, they don't let you workout to your full capacity if you grunt you get in trouble with the staff (their afraid that it might scare or intimidate some of their customers) come on, get real its a judgment free zone? so how come they are judgemental against someone who really wants to workout hard and put all effort into it example: a police officer got into trouble in the Maine planet fitness for grunting !! hopefully he chooses a different gym where he can get big enough to do his job safely!!and whatever you do don't drop the weights or you will get kicked out so if you want to workout and look like Richard Simmons go to planet fitness... if not go to any other gym like FITNESS WORLD PS. fitness world will not allow their members to be rude to other members instead they encourage each other

A gym with no scales, no stability balls and no free weights?
Okay, maybe not the gym for me.

I loved my world gym, and I wanted to stay at PF because it was cheap and close to my home... but the customer service was absolutely the worst in the galaxy... at Planet Fitness.

I think Planet Fitness ripped me off!
by jeepinwelch ,Nov 19 '08
Pros: Not very crowded.
Cons: Very poor customer service.
I was a member of Planet Fitness for more than a year.  It is a low key gym with most people using treadmills and elliptical machines.  I lost the credit card that they were taking out the automatic payments from and had to get a new one re-issued.  I forgot that was were the payments were coming out of until I got a call from Planet Fitness saying I owed them $70.  They continued running my card and racking up return fees without calling me to tell me there was a problem.  Since it is in the contract that there is a $10 return fee for each charge there isn't much I can do but pay the bill and cancel my membership.  When I talked to the GM he told me they had way too many members to take the time to inform them that there is a problem with payments.  They wait until the fees are high enough to make it cost effective to collect.

The Walmart of gyms
by kopka ,Sep 07 '07
Pros: cheap
Cons: smelly, creapy managers, no local charm.
I was a member in Portsmouth, NH for a while. The men's locker-room was stinky. It was always crowded between 3 and 7 pm, with lines for benches and bar bells. The whole place has the aura of a big corporate chain.

Perfect for My Use
by palmharbor48 ,Jan 12 '09
Pros: $10/month
no contract
$1 enrollment fee (when I joined)
CLEAN, New equipment. (In Palm Harbor)
Cons: Aerobics would be nice but then it wouldn't be $10/month.
Lots of opinions here.  PF is absolutely NOT World Gym.  It is unfortunate that so many were switched as there are no similarities.  It is a large room full of workout equipment.  That's all.  For me, that's perfect.  My local Bally's closed, sticking me with 2 more years already paid membership and a 30min drive each way to the nearest one.  I am delighted to pay $10/month without a contract.

Planet Fitness in Stuart Florida
by hollister8733 ,Jan 14 '09
Pros: some what clean
Cons: If you like being ripped off then join Planet Fitness.
First off let me just say that the service and unfriendly staff was enough to make me want to cancel my membership right away. Anyways the main reason why i decided to close my membership there was due to the fact that they kept billing my checking account double every month! Their excuse was that it was my old gym(planet fitness in Lantana Florida) was still charging me as well as this Stuart location. I told this my themanager and ask her if she would please call them to have the charges stop. She then replied by saying that "its not my problem sir i dont even have their number and thats something your going to have to solve yourself" Overall the manager was extremely rude and did not help me once so ever. I would never recommend this gym to anyone because of my personal bad experience.

Planet Fitness Out to screw you
by peevedjoesoap ,Dec 08 '08
Pros: Good facilities
Cons: Terrible contracts, pushy unpleasant sales staff.
Usless and cold attitude towards unhappy clients
I was unfortunate enought to being conned into signing a gym contract under the pretense that my monthly payments would be fixed for 3years! Unbenkown to me is theres a small clause that states that they may adjust payments! I was not given a chanc eto read through contract as I was told that the form I was Signing was just simple indemnity form with general rules and regulations.

I know very ignorant of me! Had to learn sometime!
The Sales person was very agressive and overbearing and I should have walked out! but I fell for and I signed the thing!

So Watch Out

Run from this place
by jrgman ,Oct 05 '08
Pros: Low Price
Cons: Everything Else

I joined this gym months before it opened in Nanuet, NY. The price was extremely cheap and eventually I found out why. The low price led to a very over crowded gym at all hours of the day. They felt the way to alleviate this problem was to gradually eliminate free weights and machines. They also acted rudely to members for minor details mid workout. There apparently is a no sweatshirt on the treadmill rule that they felt was necessary to address during your workout. I don't know about anyone else but I do not want to be hassled during my workout. I EVENTUALLY TERMINATED MY MEMBERSHIP but of course that was a problem as well. I went down to fill out the paperwork to quit but was still charged months later. Other than that, do not join this gym like so many others do and never step foot inside. The mentality most people have is that it is so cheap and eventually I will start working out. There are so many people with that attitude and it is how this place stays in business.

terrible service
by choade4053 ,Oct 08 '07
Pros: nothing
Cons: terrible customer service when it comes to canceling memberships.
I am trying to cancel my membership and I am told I cannot do it over the phone. I must drive there in person or send a certified letter to their corporate offices. Like the previous user, they refused to give me a corporate phone number. I am disputing further charges through American Express since I stated that they are no longer authorized to use my credit card. The AMEX rep said that it is illegal for them to refuse to cancel my membership. The clerk stated that i need to come in order to sign paperwork to authorize cancellation. I asked if they could mail me the form and that i'd be happy to sign it and mail it back and the refused also. Terrible customer service.

Planet Fitness???....try Planet Therapy, Palm Harbor, Florida!
by ramson ,Nov 20 '07
Pros: out of shape and want to pretend your doing something about it have fun!
Cons: management resembles a High School, staff is a joke
I began as a member of World Gym, and two months into my first year the change over to Planet Fitness took effect! My contract was honored (I paid twice the price of the new rate)but soon into the change key workout stations and equipment began to vanish. I tried to make use of what was available since I was paid up for the year and not on their month to month plan yet, but they filled the gym with multiple pieces of identical equipment geared for older women, and would have one unit for chest, one for shoulders and so on for anyone actually trying to get in shape! The final straw for me was when they let go the only staff member who was in great shape and had any knowledge to share with members. The reason they let Ryan go was that he no longer fit in with their image! Now you walk in and you feel like your at the 7-11 !

Planet Fitness Corporate Number!
by todaystruth ,Oct 05 '07
Pros: NONE!
Cons: Let me count the ways....staff, management, facilities, equipment, policies, rules, lunk alarm, etc, etc, etc!
My experience with Planet Fitness has been much too similar to all the complaints I have dug up on them. All I can say is I'm wishing I had found these before I signed up and wasted my hard earned money.
However, I did manage to get a hold of someone at corporate and now that I have the number, I am going to spread it around to as many people as possible. I think the more people that call in and complain to them, the better. Hopefully they’ll get tired of every call being a complaint call and actually try and change their ways or at least fire the managers and staff that run people out, or even better, just go out of business!
Also, what kind of business refuses to give out their corporate phone number??
The kind of business that knows that they’ll be shut down if enough people find out what kind of shady operation they run.
So, please, call them, and try to make a difference by giving them an earful!!

Planet Fitness Corporate phone number: 603-516-0361
I spoke with Bill, but I’m sure you could talk to anyone else (or everyone)….HA!

I've had it
by breannex ,Feb 18 '09
Pros: None
Cons: where to start...
I've had it up to here with this gym. I have not used my membership since april of 2008. I paid the rest of what I owed on my contract (roughly $180) and then was told that I could just close out my checking account and the membership would be cancelled. I have still been charged another $100 and every time I call to get this rectified I get a different answer. I want to wage a war on this gym. Does anyone have the address or phone number to corporate?

horrible! massive billing issues
by boo_pla_fit ,Mar 12 '08
Pros: no pros.
Cons: horrible customer service, snotty reps, billing problems.
my membership was suppose to be $20/ month. I got billed automatically $21.19 for over a year. then I started getting billed $41.20 each month (sometimes twice a month!!!!) I cancelled my card as a result, now they sent me to collections. the "manager" was brain-dead and no one over there would spend even two minutes listening to how my bill got screwed up 6 months in a row. horrible customer service, its not even worth it. this was for the East Haven, Connecticut Branch on Route 80 06513

Membership Contract Expiration
by shortstp73 ,Feb 22 '09
Pros: NONE
Cons: DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM IF YOU WANT TO AVOID HEADACHES.
My membership expired and I went to my local gym and requested to cancel my membership since I had a new membership with the NY Sports Club. I filled out and signed the cancellation form and paid my last payment due. I was told that everything was OK.  A few months later and began receiving bills again. I tried calling and was always being given the run around until this day Planet Fitness is sending me bills for a cancelled membership. The worst thing is that they want me to pay 1 year worth of dues for them to cancel my membership. What thieves!!!!

you get what you pay for
by rhdphg ,Sep 23 '07
Pros: people will learn why cheap is not a good value
Cons: the idea that cheap is good is very insulting to intelligent people.
planet fitness in waterford, mi must have opened knowing that the economy is so bad they can trick people into thinking a cheap gym is a good buy.
they are telling people anything to get them to sign up.
read the contract carefully. they can and will raise rates, they charge 6 months dues for cancellation, you have to pay to guarantee a rate they can change anytime, there's only one membership option, and you have to bill your bank or credit card account to pay. it's not really $10/month in the end.
the only reason they are $10/month is because not enough people signed up yet to keep the place going. if they get enough people to stay open, it will be too crowded and dirty to use the equipment.
i will continue to support the local Powerhouse gym that is clean, has good equipment that works, opens on time and has a reasonable price.
you get what you pay for. if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. why not stick with what you know and stay with the place that has consistently been open in the area.

planet fitness
by ral19 ,Aug 23 '07
Pros: Seems clean. Low monthly fee.
Cons: Sense of being a valued customer does not seem to be part of the plan.
Customer service and attention to customer satisfaction appears to be non existent. I've just joined and in addition to the start up fee, I have to pay an annual "October" fee that is non negotiable even though I will only have been a member for 5 weeks. When I tried to discuss this, I was stonewalled. I'm going to try it and see if it is convenient, but I'm already a little soured on the place.

PLANET FITNESS EXTORTS MONIES FROM BANK ACCOUNT
by ali082005 ,Feb 11 '08
Pros: PLANET FITNESS WILL PURPOSELY EXTORT MONIES FROM YOUR BANK ACCOUNT WITHOUT YOUR AUTHORIZATION OR PRESENCE
Cons: DO NOT JOIN THIS CLUB, UNLESS YOU REALLY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR BANK ACCOUNT.
PLANET FITNESS- ANCHORAGE AK, MGR. MR. GRANT
I DIDN'T RETURN TO GIVE MY UPDATE INFORMATION CONCERNING MY VISA CREDIT CARD. I HAD TO LEAVE TOWN ON AN EMERGENCY. ALTHOUGH MY INTENT WAS TO RETURN TO ANCHORAGE TO GIVE PLANET FITNESS MY UPDATED CREDIT INFORMATION, I DECIDED TO CHECK MY BANK ACCOUNT ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT PLANET FITNESS HAD BEEN TAKING THEIR MONIES OUT FOR SEVERAL MONTHS WITHOUT MY AUTHORIZATION. THIS WAS SURPRISING THAT THEY COULD GET THAT INFORMATION WITHOUT MY ASSISTANCE. PLANET FITNESS STATED THAT AK USA FEDERAL CREDIT UNION DOES THIS ALL THE TIME FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS. I CONTACTED AK USA FEDERAL CREDIT UNION AND FOUND OUT THAT THEY DIDN'T GIVE MY INFO TO THEM AND THAT PLANET FITNESS KNOWS WHAT DATES (WHEN EXPIRED) TO ENTER INTO THE COMPUTER UNTIL THE CORRECT EXPIRATION DATE ACCEPTS THE TRANSACTION. WELL THE BANK RESTORED MY ACCOUNT TO WHAT IT WAS AND THE BANK IS GOING AFTER PLANET FITNESS FOR FRAUDULENT ACTIVITY ON MY ACCOUNT. I HAVE CANCELED MY CONTRACT WITH PLANET FITNESS.
