  • “something to tell you that will absolutely blow your mind”

    Apr 07 '04
Pros: A witty character study that bends formulas, and uses cynicism, but doesn't succumb.
Cons: I think Roger's loathsomeness is mostly bluster, and interesting bluster at that. You might not.

Summary: The first thing we see Roger doing is, pretty much, the same as the second and third and fourth things we will see Roger doing: he is talking. No, he is lecturing, holding forth. He’s a blowhard; his friends know it, and Roger seems to as well, ... read more

  • The Tao of Roger

    Nov 24 '04
Pros: solid performances, intelligent script, interesting idea for a film
Cons: mature subject matter, somewhat gritty, not very kinetic

Summary: Remember that really cool movie, The Tao of Steve, about a thirty-something-year-old beer-bellied screw-up who at least knew how to pick up girls? Well, it's baaaaaaaaak. This time, however, we've traded in old Anakin for a brand new Darth. Everbody ... read more

  • Flippin' the script on a so-called player: Roger Dodger

    Aug 06 '03
Pros: Generally clever writing, some good performances
Cons: A bit pedantic and obvious

Summary: We've all seen the guy before: smart, savvy, kinda sexy, definitely smarmy. He brags of being able ... read more

  • One of Campbell Scott's finest performances (DVD Review)

    Jul 12 '03
Pros: Sharp writing, performances. Nice DVD edition
Cons: Some may be turned-off by the mean-spiritedness.

Summary: The Oscars will wrap up this coming Sunday and, aside from the talk of who won and who didn't, dis ... read more

  • NICKY GOES DOWN

    Jun 02 '03
Pros: Great writing; terrific acting from Campbell Scott, newcomer Jesse Eisenberg and supporting cast
Cons: Often loses focus; Kidd needs to refine visual style to match writing.

Summary: Written and directed by Dylan Kidd, ROGER DODGER is an amusing and somewhat effective coming of age tale that can be regarded as an alpha male response to "Sex and the City," as well as a less venal cousin to "In the Company of Men." Like latter film, in ... read more

  • Roger, Over and Out

    Apr 26 '03
Pros: First-rate performance by Campbell Scott; caustic, razor-sharp wit.
Cons: Vapid, uninteresting female characters seem to justify Roger's misogyny.

Summary: Women are rarely attracted to the type of man who’s good for them, and it’s unfortunate for me that I find the Roger Dodgers of the world attractive. You know the type: intelligent, perhaps brilliant, with an irrepressible urge for savage ... read more

  • One man's pursuit of sex.

    Feb 28 '03
Pros: A sensational performance by Campbell Scott. Incredible dialogue!
Cons: A little heavy on the use of handheld cameras.

Summary: Roger Dodger is a clever and highly amusing independent film that explores man’s perennial interest in sex. Combining black comedy and poignant drama, it snaps and sizzles as it takes us on a fascinating ride through a day in the life of one ... read more

  • A Night out with Roger

    Dec 12 '02
Pros: Scott and Eisenberg are great; the script is smart and perceptive
Cons: The ending unnecessarily tries to reconcile the main character

Summary: Roger Dodger leaves all possible pretense of the softer nature of its main character behind in the opening scene, and it only falters slightly near the end when it attempts to reconcile him with the past. In the scene, Roger Swanson (Campbell ... read more

  • One Movie about Sex You Can Watch and Still Respect Yourself in the Morning

    Nov 23 '02

    Cons: Cinematography

Summary: Stars 1. Campbell Scott - Roger Swanson 2. Jesse Eisenberg - Nick Executives 1. Directed/Writer - Dylan Kidd 2. Joaquín Baca-Asay - Cinematography Awards 1. Best Feature Film award at ... read more

  • Sex, The City and Misguided Seduction

    Oct 29 '02
Pros: Fresh, original, venomous observations from the male perspective on the singles-scene
Cons: Overly talky scenes that beg for editing and too much jerky hand-held camerawork

Summary: First-time writer/director Dylan Kydd makes a distinctive debut with this comic, acerbic portrait of a glib, arrogant Manhattan bachelor introducing his dorky 16 year-old nephew from Ohio to the intricacies of casual sexual conquest. ... read more
