Pros: Loaded with ideas and inspiration! Cons: Not for the home baker, low-end or high quantity suppliers
Not for "home bakers". Designs are beautiful, directions better than I expected. Other review basically stated that these are not for everyone. True, but you get what you pay for. Would I make one of these for a client for $200-300? Absolutely not. These are high-end designs with a lot of labor involved. If you've ever been to or seen the Oklahoma Cake Competitions, that's the level of her book.
Probably won't make any exact replicas of any of her cakes, but there are a lot of design ideas presented and presented well. Many of the ideas can be incorporated into smaller, less expensive cakes.
Most of the tools/special ingredients are available on-line at most cake decorating supply sites. So far, I have not run into anything I could not find online. Many of which you can find at Beryl's or Sweet Celebrations.
Interesting but not practical cakes. by sugarflowers ,Apr 30 '04
Pros: The price is going down. Cons: Techniques are not practical for the decorator trying to run a business.
The cakes shown in this book have some interesting techniques, but are pretty much worthless for most cake designers. Most of the tools used are difficult to obtain, the colors in the book are almost monochromatic, and most people are not willing to pay what it would cost do make these cakes for real an actual wedding. There are some beautiful cakes from other decorators that were so graciously allowed into the book.
