Very good but not great
by fasnater ,Mar 30 '06
Pros: Its size and design are awesome
Cons: HD quality not great. Too much movement in the video even with the image stabilizer.
I purchased my HD1 at J&R. Its size and design are awesome but the HD video quality, while good is not great. Indoor video is pretty dark. There may be a way to manually make adjustments to get better video indoors but I haven't been able to figure it out yet. It's so light (weight-wise)that even with the image stabilizer on, there is a lot of movement in the video and still images. A tripod or monopod would be helpful.

Small size, but uneven video quality
by leuthold ,Sep 04 '06
Pros: Small, high res (720p), pretty good battery life.
Cons: Poor color balance using 'auto'. Poor and noisy low level light performance.
I was looking for a pocketsize HD digital camcorder/camera and was quite excited when I saw the Sanyo. I've been using it now for about 6 months and I'm now just starting to make ok videos. The camera has a couple of major problems. First, is that the video is way oversaturated with the 'auto' white balance-especially violet and red-orange. This can be partially corrected by using the manual white balance. Second is that the low light performance is poor, and videos that you can make come out very noisy. Also, any pictures or video made using ISO 200 or higher, are noisy. I manually set it to 50 or 100. All this monkeying around with settings before taking a pic or video makes me miss some of the action at times. Another minor problem is that sharp diagional lines in HD mode are jagged and this appears to be a problem with the mpeg4 compression. Most of the time, this isn't a problem.
