Pros: Great Story, Good for Sports Fans Cons: None
You hear about the rough tough life of inner city kids of New York and Chicago, who play basketball all day because they have no money and nothing else to do. This book brings all that to life, sometimes too clearly. I won't reveal any details or the...
Pros: This book keeps you turning pages Cons: It's too short
This book is based on a boy named Greg "Slam" Harris. He can do it all on the basketball court but his grades aren't to good. His temper is bad, he's always on the verge of exploding. Growing up in the hood and listening to gun shots and police sirens you would build up a temper too. He was known to be a lucky kid but what if his luck runs out. He is playing a game of one on one with his future and he can't afford to lose. Walter Dean Myers is my new favorite artist for writing this book
Pros: This book relates to many of young people. Cons: In my opinion this book does not have any negative parts in it.
Slam is a book that in my opinion is one that most Black African- American males would enjoy, or has experienced.
This is one of Walter-Dean Myers best work. This book setting takes place in Harlem, New York. It is about a student -athlete named Greg Harris who is facing the adversity of growing up poor in the ghettos of Harlem.Greg is inbeatable on the basketball court so he is really cocky, and he is a polite person. You could call him a bully. If you are not kissing the ground he walk on then you better prepare to be disrespected.Greg is not really smart and it reflects on his grades. He really can't get help his teacher because the teacher is the kind that doesn't like the hip-hop culture, and in directly blacks. You could compare this book to the movie "Finding Forrester". Due to facts similar situtations that take place.
Seventeen-year-old Greg Slam Harris can do it all on the basketball court. He's seen ballplayers come and go, and he knows he could be one of the luck...More at Barnes & Noble.com
