The Count is my Hero

by CJK , Jan 16 '00
Pros: Love, Hate, Chivalry, Romance and Revenge...This story has it all
Cons: Since this story is usually assigned reading, no one thinks to read it for fun and enjoyment
Dumas tells a story of a man who was betrayed, wrongfully imprisoned, and who later, once free, weaves a sophisticated web of revenge. Because "The Count..." takes place and was written so long ago, the lifestyles, thoughts, and social...

One of his best

by gideon7 , Aug 30 '00
Pros: The fist few hundred pages
Cons: A little heavy in the middle
What can I say that hasn't been mentioned time and time again, this has to be one of the most gripping book ever written.
From the first hundred pages where the leading character is jailed, his
experiences in jail, his rise to near G-d like...

My favorite and could very well become yours too!

by melodyofdavid , Jun 08 '05
Pros: Great story, rich characters, amazing read.
Cons: None.
I first read this book at the tender age of 14 years old when I gazed at its magnificent size in my high school library and having a fixation with big books at the time decided to snatch it up. What made me read the book was pride....so I could boast I ...

A Count is the thing to be

by kramer1084 , May 12 '00
Pros: awesome literature
Cons: some boring parts, not many though
The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas, is one of the most enjoyable books I have read in a very long time. It is about a young boy who is shot down in his prime, when everything is going so good for him, by two men who despise him for his great...

Good read for the long haul...

by shaunb , Jul 07 '00
Pros: Easy read / Fun vacation book
Cons: Lags a bit in the middle / Very long
Dumas is an excellent writer, with a great flair for the dramatic. His stories are witty, sad, exciting and intriguing and "The Count" is no exception.

This is a story which not only tells of the trials of a man's life but of the...

Revenge takes on a name....

by Epifany99 , May 02 '00
Pros: An absolutely smart plot
Cons: Some people wont like the fact that its so long.
This piece of literature is absolutely first-class. I was unable to put this book down, i was taken on an emotional roller coaster from soaring heights of happiness to the depths of hell that the main character experienced. Revenge takes on a name in...

Condoning jailbreak?

by hspencer , Dec 28 '99
Pros: engaging story line
Cons: difficult names
Alexander Dumas' _The Count of Monte Cristo_ is engaging, riveting adventure literature. This book captures all aspects of fascinating literature: action, character development, romance, friendship. Although the writing style is a bit long-winded at...

Wonderful

by nerys , May 15 '00
Pros: Plot
Cons: Wordy at times
When you think of a classic, do you think of dry and boring? Then don't think of this book as a classic. I saw this book redone by Wishbone on PBS, one of my favorite shows. After that, I wanted to read it. Alexander Dumas, the author of other classics...

Liberati...

by ebony_tan , Dec 01 '01
Pros: the drama and mystique of the Count will awe you...
Cons: may be viewed by some people as a little bit extreme

I've read the Count of Monte Cristo twice, and there was never a dull moment in it. The Count of Monte Cristo is filled with plots, vengeance, power, and dignity. The Count will amaze you on how he partakes on the vengeance for the men whom have...

A Tragic Tale

by leelugiggles , Sep 05 '00
Pros: Great Story
Cons: Old Language/Grammar use
I was assigned to read this book for my English summer reading program.
I chose it because it was written by Dumas who also wrote The Three Musketeers, and The Man in The Iron Mask. I had a hard time starting it because of the way it is written,...

Trust & Betrayal. Rise and Demise. Spectacular!
by charliepappas ,Aug 07 '06
Pros: Betrayal, Deception, Lies, Murder, Suspense, want more?
Cons: If you have little character might confuse you.
If you are really interested in understanding beyond theory how exactly "the end justifies the means", you have found the answer to your prayers. The cruelty of Count Mondego in betraying his best friend, Edmond Dantes, so that he could enjoy Dante's soon-to-be-bride sending Dantes to prison for a murder he did not commit. The turnaround of Dantes to Count of Montecristo is magnificient and self-powering. Dantes impersonation of Montecristo and the carry out of his revenge clearly displays how far a man will go to obtain what is rightfully his disregarding any ethical and moral conduct as well as the law.

The story is slow but very compelling and will keep you hooked.

I recommend reading a plot summary to understand the story so that you can further enjoy Dumas' magic.
