Pros: It's another book in this fantastic world. Cons: Suddenly, I see a rather dangerous trend rising...
As a young child, I remember my first entrance into this wonderful world of Pern. Like most girls, I felt like Lessa during her Impression. I empathized with Menolly. And I absolutely loved Robinton. Who wouldn't?
But with The Skies of...

Pros: Tells you what happened next to Lessa, F'lar, etc. after "All the Weyrs". Cons: A sequel that can't stand on its own. Plot not very compelling.
If you're not familiar with Anne McCaffrey's popular series of "Pern" books, this is the wrong entry point. If you've read some "Pern" books but you have NOT read "All the Weyrs of Pern", read it before you read "Skies of Pern" because otherwise you'll...

Pros: Continues the translation from fantasy to SF. Cons: Very well could be the last novel in this beloved world by Anne.
Perhaps the greatest problem with the book is that it cannot really stand-alone. It is very much part of a series, and even a Pern fan should read All the Weyrs of Pern first if they want to appreciate this one fully. With that said it isn't so much a...

Pros: Another (and more than likely one of the last) Pern book. Cons: Disjoint and jumpy
Let me state up front: I am one of Ms. McCaffery's greatest fans. I own every book that she has published, and loved almost all of them. That being said, I did not enjoy this offering. Let me share why....
The skies of Pern have changed....

Pros: Well you can read about Pern again. Cons: This is so sad.
“Well, some will have no trouble,’ she said. ‘They don’t consider it beneath their dignity to deliver messages or transport urgently needed bulk items. Tagetarl sent us a copy of the dictionary that he copied from Avias’s files with definitions and...

Pros: McCaffrey can write. Pern an interesting world Cons: Patchy pace. Contrived plot. Poor character development.
Anne McCaffrey is one of my favourite authors; her Pern novels, sitting between science fiction and ...

Pros: You get to find out what happens next Cons: Not the book to start reading about Pern
When I started reading Pern novels, I found that one of the best facets of McCaffrey's work, was that your preferences were always with the "good guys". Skies Of Pern sadly wavered in trying to ensure that you were cheering for the heroes, but you...

Pros: It takes you to the next step in the Dragonriders of Pern. Cons: This could be the last Pern book written by McCaffery, but I hope it isn't!
The Skies of Pern is a very good book indeed. I have started writing my own book, and can see that it is truly hard to accomplish the depth in which Anne McCaffery writes. The beginning was somewhat hard to get into, but by the middle of the book I...
