Pros: Good fuel economy, Toyota reliability, impressive cargo space. Cons: Underpowered engine, cheap interior quality, poorly designed audio system. The Bottom Line: A generally agreeable ride that handles well and gets solid gas mileage. However, there are better alternatives in the hatchback class.
Introduced in 2002 as an 03 model, the Toyota Matrix has enjoyed a fair amount of success in the economy car segment. The Matrix, and its twin Pontiac Vibe, is the result of a joint venture between Toyota and GM to marry the Corolla-based platform with ...

This past summer wasn’t a nice year for me. My 1997 GMC Jimmy SLT caught on fire after I drove some 60 miles from my home to visit relatives in Los Angeles. The fire started at the right front wheel well area of my truck. My father said, “Hey look! Your ...

It was time to replace my 11 year old Ford F-150. I loved that truck, but the soaring price of gasoline made it very difficult to purchase another pickup truck. I had decided to replace it with a small car that was capable of 30 miles per gallon on the ...

Pros: Value, room, mileage, trunk space, decent handling, lots of aftermarket options. Cons: Power, blind spots, hard plastics throughout interior. The Bottom Line: The little Corolla's all grown up, and more youthful than ever all at the same time.
Searching for a new car, I came across a fairly limited array of choices. My salary makes me worth my weight in fertilizer, so I was pretty much hard-limited to compacts, or something somewhat larger that was as bare-bones as possible. Also, with only ...

Last fall, when the Transmission on my Subaru Legacy started to die, we began looking at replacements. I have previously owned a Datsun Station Wagon, a Corolla Station Wagon, and a Legacy Wagon. I love Station Wagons because they make it easy to ...

Bought my 2006 Matrix a few months ago and I thought I owed this site and its readers a review on the car. I'm going to try to make this brief. Inside the car: Tons of space in every area. Lots of headroom, legroom, backseats and cargo area are ...

Pros: Fold down passenger front seat. Corners great! Good gas mileage. Cons: Hard (impossible?) to get a base model. Daytime Running Lights. Tiny/Cramped Clutch pedal. The Bottom Line: Considering many of the annoying qualities with this vehicle are common in newer rigs these daze, the Matrix can be recommended.
The wife and I have both a Matrix and a 2000 Echo. I have told her that if I were tasked to improve both vehicles - my improvement list for the Echo would be very short. But the list on the Matrix would be very, very long. Firstly, ...

Pros: Interior configuration, seat comfort, ease of getting in/out, mileage Cons: Cruise control on hills, engine power, hatchback cover The Bottom Line: It rides comfortably, even on long trips, and the interior configuration is amazingly useful and flexible. It's like having a truck, SUV, and fuel-efficient compact car all in one!
Just before Christmas, the door latch on my 1990 Lexus broke, and rather than spend $600 to fix it, we decided it was time for a new car. While we were dealer-hopping, we saw a Matrix. "That's kind of cute," I told my husband. Neither of us had ever ...

Great on and off road

Pros: Multi-use vehicle with lots of nifty features. Cons: None so far
The Toyota Matrix XR with 4WD is fun to drive in town as well as on country roads. It handles beautifully, is roomy and comfortable for its size, and has lots of cargo room in the back hatch. I especially find the plastic lining of the batch hatch useful and durable. The fact that it's a little bit higher off the ground than all other cars in its category makes putting kids in carseats easier on the back and provides better visibility for the driver. The front passenger seat folds down forward completely, thus making a flat table-like surface for the occasional picnic by the side of the road, or a handy change table if you have a baby.

2006 Toyota Matrix - Fun to Drive and Tons of Room

Pros: Great gas mileage, lots of fun driving the stick shift, easy to park Cons: Daytime Running Lights and automatic lights are sometimes annoying
After driving a Ford Explorer for the last 10 years, we got tired of the high fuel prices and wanted a smaller car with better mileage. After trying out a bunch of models, we settled on the Toyota Matrix. The back seat only has about 2 inches less width than the Explorer and the leg room is very comparable to the Ford Explorer. We can get two car seats into the back and still have room for a thin adult to sit in the middle. There is a lot of head room for both front and back seats. The back space has been more than enough to haul groceries, boxes, etc. and we have not missed the Ford Explorer.

Great Car-Bad Tires

Pros: Reliable, well-made car, good overall value. Cons: 2006 Continental tires have poor wear pattern. Seats could use a lumbar adjustment.
Overall, the car is just what you would expect from Toyota. Reliable, smart, economical (although the mileage I get is a touch under advertised), and fun to drive. The only complaint that I have is the Continental tires that came on the 2006 model. I have 15,000 miles on them and the inside edge is worn excessively. This odd tire wear was discovered by the Toyota mechanic and has continued despite a tire rotation and alignment check from the dealer. Ive since called the Toyota customer service center to no result. They have directed me towards the tire manufacture. A friend of mine had the 2007 Matrix with Goodyear tires and has not had any tire wear issues.
