I recommend the Triumph Legend to beginner riders for ease and comfort but with a bit more power than most starter bikes so you won't grow out of it.

The R1100R is a rock solid "bare" bike. With options, it'll tour almost as well as an RT. Even with some known issues, it's a great bike overall.

Great little bike for around town and short freeway trips. If you want to take long freeway trips look into a bigger bike.
