I bought a scooter from gsmotorworks back in 2007. It lasted one year and became a dud. Truth is, I think it always had a problem, just took a year before she didn't want to run anymore. Chinese engineering sucks!

Shoehorny has written a very good guide- I'd only add two comments:

1. The Tomos mopeds, built in Slovakia, are probably the best quality mopeds still being imported, and have good parts availability- something not true of a lot of the Chinese bikes.

2. The classic 70s bikes seem to be really appreciating in price- a mint Maxi that sold for $300 a few years ago can now command $600 or even $700 as the demand goes up. There are probably still some deals at yard sales and in basements- grab 'em while you can.
