Make it a gift!
Nov 20 '00
With Christmas looming, many of us are looking for gift ideas.
What better gift than roadside safety during the months of treacherous winter driving.
I'm inspired to write this opinion by Naomi7835's wonderful review on the same topic and urge you to read her opinion at: http://worthnoting.epinions.com/auto-review-17E8-2F8F258A-3A13CE2B-prod3
I won't repeat her own great advice, except to add to what she has written about a disaster-preparedness kit for your car. And here's where I suggest you prepare this kit for someone you love, wrap it up, and put it under the tree.
While in Mexico I bought two great Mexican blankets, one for mom and one for sis. I'll put these two blankets in the safety kit for starters with a note that they might want to replace them with warmer, older blankets from their linen closets.
I think I'll buy two cheaper duffel bags from a discount department store to store the kits in. My lovely family members will only have to carry the duffel bags to the trunk of their cars, and leave them there.
Of course I hope disaster never strikes them on the road, but if it does, both of them carry cell phones and they will be able to call for help. In the meantime, inside the bag they will find a small bag of kitty litter, a collapsable shovel, some chocolate bars for my sister and some canned ready-to-open, ready to eat fruit (with a spoon) for my mom, because she's allergic to chocolate. These things, along with the high energy snack as suggested by Naomi, will help them dig out of trouble, or sustain themselves if they cannot. Like Naomi I would add a flashlight (with fresh batteries), and a first aid kit. I'd add to it a candle and matches wrapped in a ziplock baggie, because a lit candle can keep an entire car warm for hours. I'll add a paperback novel because boredom's a killer in its own right, (cheap from a used bookstore) and a set of roadside emergency flares. Last but not least, more related to comfort of course, I'll tuck in warm winter tams, a spare pair of thick socks, and woolen mittens.
I can't tell you the number of time's I've left the office leaving my leather gloves and fancy fashion hat on my credenza, and I'm sure those silly thin trouser socks I wear won't hold me in good stead should I really get stuck in a winter hazard.
I'll make a third bag for myself, and in it I'll add a travel toy - for my daughter.
Happy trails! Hope none of us ever need these roadside winter bags, but better to be prepared. Before you hit the road, be sure to read Naomi's epinion. The url once again is: http://worthnoting.epinions.com/auto-review-17E8-2F8F258A-3A13CE2B-prod3
