Helping your young person pick a SAFE carJun 04 '00 Write an essay on this topic. In our city the graduations from high school and college started this weekend. I know that many get cars as gifts at this time of year. Whether you are looking for a car for your high school student or one that is going off to college here are some hints for finding the safest car. --Look for a midsize car or a full size one. I would steer them from small vehicles. The bigger and heavier the car the more protection you have in case of an accident. It doesn't have to be the biggest. --Buy a newer vehicle. The latermodel cars will have the latest safety equipment. Features that you should look for are antilock brakes. These are now standard on vehicles. They will help your teen maintain control of their vehicle during quick hard stops. Air bags are another feature you should look for in a car. Some of the cars with air bags have it marked on the steering wheel or on the dashboard of the passenger side. If you still have questions about whether or not it has an air bag check the owner's manual. --Check the vehicle service records to make sure that they are up to date. You want to make sure that none of the systems are going to be failing or need to be replaced soon. Have your mechanic check the car out to make sure it is safe. --You can check the safety records or the vehicle before you buy it. You can do this online at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety site at http://www.highwaysafety.org --Stay away from any car that might encourage speeding like a sports car. One can only hope that driving a station wagon might discourage driving in a reckless manor. Remember also that the insurance on these types of cars are higher. This is just a beginning list. I also know that the price of a vehicle is important. Hopefully you can get the safest car for the money you have available. Let me know if you have other suggestions. It is a big responsibility to own and drive a car. |
