Is It REALLY Premium?
Mar 09 '00
First of all, I want to state that I am NOT speaking for all gas stations. I can only tell you about a small handful that I know of. And I cannot reveal the actual name for fear that the stupid owner will sue me. But I can tell you that they are located in Lakewood, Wheatridge, and Denver, Colorado (there are more locations but these are the ones I have absolute knowledge of).
I was a manager for one of the stations and was young and naive. I was told to keep quiet or I would lose my job. Since I no longer work for them and I'm not revealing their name, I feel rather safe.
Whether you buy regular or premium, THERE MAY NOT BE A DIFFERENCE!!! Many times, when the gas trucks would come and fill the tanks, if they had too much regular left in the truck, they would empty the truck by dumping the rest in the premium tank or in the mid-grade tank.
One night, my graveyard shift girl called me in a panic. She told me that the premium tank was empty. I told her to go take another reading (which was done with really long sticks that we stuck into the tanks) and call me back. She called back to tell me that, yes indeed, it was empty. I called the gas provider and told them we needed a full tank of premium, IMMEDIATELY! When the truck got there, the driver informed me that the premium tank was full!! The poor girl had put the stick in upside down and gotten a wrong reading! So the driver proceeded to put as much of that premium, high quality gas as he could into the other two tanks (the regular and mid-grade tanks). So now there was a complete hodge-podge of gas in all three tanks and no one was really getting anything different, no matter what they thought they were buying.
So be careful where you buy your gas and remember that cheaper prices doesn't always mean that you're getting a bargain, and just because you put the premium nozzle into your tank, doesn't mean that premium is going to come out.
