Pros:All over grunt
Cons:Not enough rubber on the road
The initial appeal of the GSX-R1100K was it's looks for me. There is something about the older styled Suzuki before they headed toward the hump-back look that I really like. I think it's because it looks like muscle on wheels.
The K model was the last GSX-R before going to USD forks, and close to last for having the two separate headlights. I prefer the twin headlight look as opposed to the all in one with glass cover that the later models have. The L model (which is what I would buy given half a chance) reaps the benefits of the USD forks and the twin headlights - everything a girl could want!
First impression of the Gixer was the foot-pegs were set very high, although I think this came from riding a Bandit beforehand. I became accustomed to the riding position very quickly and found it very comfortable at high speeds. While I had the bike I rode it in an organized Charity ride - big mistake. After riding 30 minutes at 60mph my right wrist was killing me. This bike was not made to travel at the speed limit. Once the speed comes up the weight gets lifted off the wrists and you're away laughing.
I was told by the dealer to look out for a few of things when riding the bike; the first was the death weave at 95mph, and the second was the tendency to 'slap' over bumps, and the third was the power band from 7000revs. These warnings made me cautious at first, but after a quick stop at the gas station I was rearing to go. It seems that there was only 16 pound of pressure in the rear tyre so I pumped it up and figured that would be the death weave sorted out. The 'slapping' problem I thought I better find out more for myself.
After a quick spurt up to 120mph through some twisties I found that a twiddle with the steering damper had the vicious slapping quieted, though I was yet to find the elusive power band. A whole afternoon later I was still to find it. Don't get me wrong the bike had more than enough power - in no way was it lacking. It was just a little disappointing to expect a surge of power and not get one.
I ride a Bandit 1200 everyday, and it is common knowledge that the GSX-R1100K shares the same motor with the Bandit. The earlier Suzuki would eat the Bandit and spit it out for breakfast. Their low down power is all but identical, but up top the Gixer will pull away without looking back.
