Be Prepared With Lots of KnowledgeMay 09 '00 (Updated Nov 08 '00) Write an essay on this topic.I just recently purchased a brand new car by myself for the first time. I can truly say it was fun but very stressful at times. I first recommend that you go into the dealership knowing exactly what you want, options and all, and know a price you will pay. Second of all, be prepared to be fooled by the dealer. What I mean by this is that I found the dealer trying to become my best friend. He was trying to make me feel like I was the only person that mattered at the time and that we had known each other for years. I realize that the car dealer's job is to sell me the car on the spot but he does not have to put on a show for me. Just be prepared for this. Going into the dealership was a good feeling because I knew what I wanted and knew the price I would pay. I also recommend doing your research before you go to the dealership, that way you will be somewhat knowledgeable of the product you are interested in. If you are not knowledgeable be prepared to be eaten alive by the dealership. They will try to take you for every penny possible. I bought my car for around sticker price because it was a brand new Jetta, silver with the leather package, and I knew these cars basically sold themselves , so it would be hard to get the dealership to go down a whole lot in price. I was able to get a few options free but had a tough time talking the dealer down any further. Had I not done my research I probably would have turned down the offer because it was right around sticker price but like I said I knew these cars were selling themselves. I came to find out that the Jetta I got was the only silver one with black leather on the lot and it had just came off the truck. I jumped on it right away and did not let it get away from me. The last piece of advice I would give has to do with people that wish to lease a car, rather than buy it like I did. I would tell these people to go in with attitude you are going to buy the car, even tell the dealer you are going to buy it. Then sit down with the dealer and talk price. Once you come to an agreement on price let the dealer know you actually are going to lease it. I have heard from other people that by using this technique you are able to talk dealers down further in price if they think you are buying rather than leasing. So if leasing a car is right for you try this technique and see what happens. Obviously to see if this technique works you would have to go to two different dealerships and try both ways. |
