I did not think that I would ever be able to drive one. If I can then you can. The reason that it is important is, what if there were an emergency situation and the only car that was around had a manual transmission in it? I guess that you could drive it in first gear till you got to your destination. But how good would that be on the car. Manual transmissions are so much easier now that they have the Shifting mechanisms on the floor and not on the side of the steering wheel. They have synchronized the gears so that it is easier to go through the gears on most of the later model cars. Manual transmissions are easier to control in situations where you are driving on ice and snow. With a automatic you cannot shift down like you can in a manual. You have to rely on the automatic transmission to do this for you. When you are going up a steep hill or down a steep incline you also have more control with a manual then with a automatic. For Teenagers just learning to drive it may be better to send them to driving school and have them learn on one of the cars that they provide. This will save wear and tear on your clutch. I started to teach my daughter to drive a stick but the clutch started smelling like rotten eggs so I think that she may have been burning it up. If you are going to teach someone to drive a manual transmission. Take them out to a isolated place where they can learn at their own pace. They have to get use to the clutch and know where the point is that they can release it. Then take them to a slight incline. Even the slightest incline made me nervous when I was learning.
