Invoice cost vs. the REAL invoice
by Bonies7 | Dec 24 '99
Okay...true confessions now. I actually was a car salesman during my college years. But no - I never did wear the white shoes with the matching white belt...I promise you, I didn't! Actually, my uncle owned a dealership and he got a waiver that...

Holdback (Reply to this comment)
by jrwebley
An excellant piece! It just goes to show you how important your up front research is before buying. Holdback is on of the least understood aspects of the car purchase experience. Find out exactly what the holdback is on your vehicle before negotiating.

It isn't fair for a dealer to make $450 in holdback on a $15000 car? Why don't you ask furniture salespeople about the 100% markup on furniture? Oh, but thats different. Car dealers are in business to make a profit. ALL businesses are there to make a profit. Why is it so illiegal for car dealers to make profit? I still haven't figured that one out.

facts, facts, and more facts. (Reply to this comment)

I totally agree with this opinion. I've just recently brought a new car last summer. Before I brought my car, I consulted a car dealer "friend" of mine and he was telling me the same thing. I took my friend with me car shopping and when we were nogotiating you should have saw the dealer's face when my friend dropped the facts and figures on him.

I'm not sure how to react to the comments above regarding my "female side". Thanks...but I can assure you I'm 100% male.

My wife is the feminine writer of our family...she writes here at Epinions under the member name "Amana97"....and I can assure you she's very feminine.

Bonies7 delights the reader with her humor. She includes details of a "ploy" to fool the consumer and a concrete example which explains how the ploy works. Bonies7 also suggests that the reader "read all of the epinions " which highlights some real feminine objectivity.

ivoice cost vs. real price (Reply to this comment)

Great advice. I am fairly savvy at car negotiating, (at least I thought) but the holdback was confusing. I thought I got a real good deal with my '98 Camry until I analyzed the entire transaction afterword. I wasn't prepared to "walk away from the deal," which is what Bonies7 advises. It won't happen again. Thanks.

It's like getting roulette advice at Rick's from Captain Reynaud. ('I am shocked - shocked - to find that gambling is going on this establishment.' 'Your winnings, Capitaine Reynaud.' 'Thank you.') After a youthful fling in the car bidness, thank God you stayed out of law school.

Superb piece, as ever.
