Transmission HeavenAug 04 '00 (Updated Aug 05 '00) Write an essay on this topic.I got some transmission service done to my 92 Honda and wanted to share this valuable information with readers. I got my transmission "flushed" at the dealer and my 92 Honda is just like a brand new car. If you would like to keep your car for years and keep it running in tip top condition, I would suggest that you, too, have your transmission flushed. There are two ways to do this: One is to just drain out the old transmission fluid and replace it with new (like an oil change). That may be alright for a newer car, however, in an older car, it needs to be "flushed." This is where they hook up a machine to it and actually flush out all of the old fluid and fill it up again with new fluid. After quite a few years, your transmission fluid fills with metal particles which can bog down your transmission system. When they flush it, it takes out all of that debris and really cleans your system. It makes a lot of sense to me. I found out about this quite a few years back and decided that my car didn't need this because it was not old enough. This year, we decided to go ahead and do it because the car is now 8 years old. It made a lot of sense to me but I wasn't sure whether I would really notice any difference or not. The gears were shifting in a sluggish manner and it just felt like the car was pushing to run. I figured it was getting up in age and so this would be about normal. I am so pleased with this service because my 8 year old car now runs like a brand new car. Now, I know I will be able to keep it for a long, long time which is my intention because it is larger than the new cars and I just love it. I suppose I'll do this again in another 5 years or so. And to top it off, the cost was minimal for the end result. I went to the dealer which is where I believe one should go for this service. I don't think a regular mechanic has this equipment, because I had asked a few. The cost was a mere $80.00 which to me is nothing compared to what I gained from the service. So, if you want to keep your car running smooth and clean - ask your dealer about the transmission flush. I highly recommend this service. ADDED NOTE: I just received a note from a reader who informed me that when you get this done - you must also make sure they put a new filter in because he had a car that was "flushed" and the old filter was put back in and he had a lot of trouble after that. He had to go to a mechanic and get the filter replaced. So a note to the wise - get a new filter too! Thanks Sunliner!!! |
