First mods: Some basic, easy things people do first.Aug 06 '00 Write an essay on this topic.Ahh.. Cars. They're great. But you know what? When a company engineers cars, they make a balance. They put in performance, but they also need comfort. So they compromise. But you don't like that compromise. You want power, and don't care if you pay for it in more noise, or wear, or money. Good choice. Here are some basic first time things with some of my recomendations. Engines need air. Air mixes with the gas and gets compressed, then a spark plug ignites it and creates power. But engines hate, hate, HATE, heat. So one of the easiest ways to add hp is get an intake. This is cheap, and will add more hp then your exahust or header. There are 2 types of intakes. A cold air induction, and a short ram. Cold airs plumb down to your front tire well right behind the bumper usually, and suck in cold air. This is where you would get the coldest air, unless you take a head light out and pipe it through there... But your not that crazy... Some down sides? Water. Water doesn't compress. What does that mean? You suck in water, your car just sucked in a few thousand in repairs. This is also really loud. But hey, I like that. You need to avoid 6 inch puddles, and if you live in a really rainy area, go with a short ram. Short ram. These don't go quite as deep, and are close to the radiator. People say these are bad because they suck in hot air, and have the dyno sheets to prove it. But what they don't realize is when the car is moving, air moves around. So then its not quite as hot. Theres not too much of a difference. Dyno with a fan on, there will be a difference. You might loose 1-2 hp compared to the cai (cold air intake). General rule. 7 Degrees F = 1 hp. You won't loose too much. I recomend AEM's CAI. Hell, I'll bet 90% of people do. It works good. Plan to spend $240. (conservative estimate) Exhaust. Unless your car has a really low restrictive system, the exhaust will add some nice noise and help air flow. Plan on adding 3-6 hp. Plan on spending $300-$400. See why the intake is so nice? I drive an Integra Type - R. I'll probably only get 1-2 hp increase. So I'm not getting a new exhaust. But it will help, and you will notice a sound difference, and a slight performance increase. Recomentation? GReddy. Great noise, good looks. Header. The header takes the exahust gases and spits them out your car. You want a nice smooth header with no sharp bends. Hey, they all usually are made like that. Hp gain? 4-8. Spend? $200-$400. Unless you go Mugen, plan on like $1100. LoL, crazy. My recomentation? DC Sports. Thats it for the basics. I will add some more on forced intuction, fuel rails, brakes, fuel injectors, ignitions later. But start easy, eh? Dennis |
