Need to buy tires?

I am lucky. I have a friend that sells tires for a living. He has given me some advice and I would love to be able to help you with your next tire purchase.
You can find out most that you need about the tire imprinted on the sidewall. The three things you can find are the tread-wear, traction, and temperature rating.
Traction is graded A-C which indicates the tires ability to stop on wet pavement. A is the best and C is the worst.
Temperature ratings are also graded A-C. A is best for heavy loads and high speeds. C means that it has met all the safety standards, you will get basic performance.
Tread-wear ratings have a baseline of 100. In theory the higher the number the longer your tires should last. Right now, a tread-wear index of 160 is low and an index of 500 is very high.
Since most tires are purchased by men you will find the ads in the newspapers to be often in the sports section. Often the ads will come out on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
If you have an average car there is little reason to buy premium tires.
Instead of buy snow tires buy all-season radials and you can save $200. These are good for everything but the most extreme snow areas.
Here is my favorite advice for saving money while buying tires. Look at your local warehouse club. You save on your purchase price of your tires. The savings on the extras is worth the trip. The tire extras are: mounting and or balancing and road hazard policies such as repair for leaks or flat for the life of your tires.
