I Can't Even Afford Regular, Let Alone Premium!

Mar 04 '00

I think back to last summer, when I was driving around all over the place, and practically filling my car up for ten dollars. Gas prices around here were around a dollar for regular, perhaps a dollar ten for premium. Things were good. My wife and I each have a car, but sometimes we carpool to work to save gas. So, we go through a lot of gas.

Now when I go to fuel up my car, I get a big time lump in my throat, and a big time drain on my wallet. I stopped to get gas today at a local gas station and the price for regular was $1.51!!! That's right, $1.51. This is getting a little ridiculous. Forget about premium, that is going nowadays for $1.70 or more around here.

Luckily, I have a economy car that does not take a lot of gas. However, that same ten dollars that used to pretty much fill up my car, is now twenty. With the looks of how things are going, soon the twenty is going to be thirty!! Geesh, I'm not made out of money.

You people out there who own sport utility vehicles and vans and trucks that guzzle gas must be feeling the push even worse than I am. I really hope there is an end to these high gas prices in sight, because they really, really are too high.

I was talking to a middle aged friend of mine, who described a time to me back in 1973-1974 when gas was in a great shortage as well. He told me about the gigantic lines to get gas, and how a lot of gas stations were closed. OK, I was only like 6 months old at this time, so I have no recollection of that. However, just think, if it was bad back then...well, the amount of cars people own since 1973 has probably multiplied by who knows what! I don't think this country could cope with a gas shortage like that.

All I know is that something needs to be done. I wish I knew what, but I don't. I've been driving for over ten years, and to the best of my recollection, I can never remember gas prices this high. To think that gas prices have risen fifty cents per gallon in a year is mind boggling.

Forget about the debate of premium vs. regular. Of course, my car operates much better when I put premium gas in. That is obvious. However, I really can't afford to spend $30 every time I have to fill my tank up.

We need to remember that gas is not a luxury. It is a necessity. Some of us HAVE to drive to work. We need gas to get where we are going on a daily basis. We need to come up with a solution to these high gas prices, and we need to do it soon. At this rate, I'm going to have to work from home, since I won't be able to get there.
