Protect Yourself....Especially Your Head!

My husband has been riding dirt bikes for 20+ years, my daughter, since she was 2, and I have been riding my quad since 1991.

My husband bought me a brand new 1991 Yamaha Breeze for Mother's Day. I had previously ridden a Honda 125 dirt bike and felt more comfortable with four wheels under me.

It's important when you're riding to have fun, but you have to use your head. Some basic rules to follow: 1) Always, and I mean always, wear your helmet. There's no justification not to. 2) Don't ride or show off above your own ability. Ride to have fun, not to impress others, because it can turn into a safety issue. 3) If you're participating in a poker run, show respect for others, especially if you're holding other up. 4) Be aware of your surroundings. There may be alot of other riders on the trail, be alert. 5) If you have it, wear the appropriate clothing, chest protector, boots, gloves, goggles. Most of all......if you come to a mud hole.....don't be afraid to go for it. If it looks too deep, have someone else, that's more experienced, go through it first to give an idea of how deep it is. It doesn't pay to get cocky..I know, I did. The next thing I knew I rolled my quad and got messed up a little. 6) Most importantly, be sure that your bike is in tip top shape. Routine maintenance will ensure safety on the trail, this includes proper licensing. For those just-in-case occasions, and from personal experience, have a small tool kit, and be sure to have an extra master link for your chain in it.

When we go Jeeping and dirt bike riding, we always find the mud. The muddier the better. Expect to get dirty and wet. It washes off.

There are alot of riding areas in Washington state that have been closed due to carelessness. Don't be one of those riders that goes against all, just to see if you can do it.....chances are, you're going to be on DNR land (Dept. of Natural Resources), and they WILL close the area especially if you get hurt. This makes it hard on those of us that don't get all that crazy out there.

Like anything else, dirt bike riding requires common sense and it's unfortunate that some people just don't have enough of it. So please, for your own sake, and the sake of ALL riders.....use your head when you're out there and always wear your helmet.
