No, driving age should be 16, as is!
May 03 '00
I am writing this in disagreement to a review I just read, by bj108423, about increasing the driving age to 18. I am 20 (21 in 3 months), so obviously this age increase would not affect me a bit. However I disagree with bj's stance quite a bit.
My first thought on the topic is that up north, in New York and New Jersey, the driving age is 18. I live in Florida and the driving age down here is 16. Driving down here is a cinch, and often it is quite fun. I am deathly afraid of driving up north. In fact, though I have only been up there a couple of times during my driving years I have yet to be on a road or highway without an increased heartbeat. Obviously raising the driving age does get crazy drivers off the road.
Another thought I have on the topic is that often kids older than 16 are living on their own. At the age of 18 many are off at college, or do not live with their parents anymore. At the age of 16 kids are under the rule of their parents, and have their parents to keep them in line. If kids didn't live with their parents by the time they got their license, they would be learning how to do a major thing when they had no rules or regement in their lives.
My last argument on this topic is that different people mature at different ages. Some of us never mature. In fact, two nights ago I almost got ran off the road by a 60something year old man in a van, who decided I was not going fast enough for him. Some 16 year olds get in the car for the first time and drive like they have been driving for years.
Some advice:
* Waving thank you is often not a proper response to someone going 20 miles an hour in a 45 mile/hour zone
* Signals are often ignored, especially when one is trying to squeeze into a lane
* If I am so close that you can't see my headlights in your rearview mirror get in the slow lane, thats the lane on the right made for people who like to drive slower than the flow of traffic. Some people like to drive faster, and I doubt any person exists that hasn't broken the speedlimit at some point in their life.
* Slamming on your brakes will not slow us down, but it may get you in an accident.
* If you do not like the music playing in another car, close your window. If you politely ask someone to turn down their radio we will probably do it. Surprisingly enough, kids of this generation can be actually very polite and considerate.
This review was not meant to insult anyone, just to prove that there is another point of view on this side of the fence.
