Stick it, I'll take the AutomaticJan 16 '00 Write an essay on this topic. It's kind of humiliating to not know how to drive a stick. But I'm willing to stand up and admit it. I never learned. I'm a late bloomer when it comes to automobiles. I did not learn how to drive until I was 22. I lived in New York City, so there really was no need to drive, not that we had a car anyway. Now, I love to drive. It makes me feel powerful. I find it relaxing for the most part. It's a great time to think things through and enjoy the scenery. I don't want to have to worry about what gear I'm in and which foot is on what pedal. My current ride is a 4-Runner. For that kind of money, I think the car had better shift itself. It seems inconvenient to have to shift the car. A lot of times I'm holding something when I'm driving... like directions, or an apple. It seems like you need three hands to shift. One for the wheel, one for the stick, and one for whatever else it is that you are juggling. My husband has a standard, but he steers with his knees, so he has a free hand anyway. And how about stopping at a red light on the incline of a hill? And what about trying to drive in the city, or stop and start traffic? Who needs that kind of grief? Every once in a while, my husband attempts to try to teach me how to drive a stick. We go out in his car to a deserted street, so as not to scare or harm any innocent bystanders. I try like hell to get out of first gear while my husband tries not to blow a headgasket. The car keeps stalling and it makes all kinds of ratcheting scraping noises. Whatever! Look, I'm just not an easing up on the clutch kind of person. I stop or I go, and when I go, I GO. So, to preserve our marriage, I think I'm ready to call it quits on on these little forays. I know that people say driving a stick is really fun and that you have more control of the vehicle. Well, my car knows who's boss and I'm perfectly willing the delegate the responsibility of deciding which gear we should be in at any given time. I'll stick with the automatic. :) |
