Car Security: The Brutal Honest Truth!

Apr 04 '00

*Boo-Bop*

Ahh.. yes...the arming sound of your brand new car security system puts your mind at ease and puts those thoughts of getting your car stolen right from under your nose in the back of your mind. Only to find out 10 minutes later, when you're walking out of the store, you have no car. What happened? and what can we do to stop some of this?

What Happened?
This question plays into alot of things. Including what kind of car you're driving, what stereo system you have playing, or anything that is visible to a thiefs eye.

Why does it matter what car you drive? Of course this question almost answers itself, if you drive a nice looking car chances are it's in what's called the 'red zone' or 'danger zone'. This zone includes expensive cars such as BMW, Mercedes, Audi, or Porsche to name a few. It also includes such lower cars as Honda Accord, Civic, and even domestic models. These are what thiefs will scout out for because they are in such high demand. With or without a car security system, the thief will attempt to get your car. Note, however, most security systems if tripped offer a fuel cutoff switch. This can easily be bypassed, by popping up the hood and disconnecting first the siren, and second the wires attached to the fuel pump. Jump in and he's gone in less than 30 seconds.

Another factor would be a stereo system. This definetly goes out to most teenagers, who blast their music with subwoofers and high-range speakers. Let me tell you, you're just asking for it! There are people that will write down license plate numbers of people who blast their music (showing off their system) and when they come across the car again, will steal the stereo equipment. It's a simple fact of life.

The last factor was anything visible to the thief that might be lying on the seat or the floor. This makes a clean and easy grab for a thief. Things can include anything from a nice pair of sunglasses, CD Cases, to loose change, or even STORE receipts. This reveals alot of information about the driver and where the thief can go to get more. Especially with receipts. If you use a charge card, it has the account number listed right on there so be very careful.

How can you stop this?
A very tough question to answer, but the simple fact of the matter is, you can't! Put all the car security you want on your car, spend thousands of dollars, but in the long run it doesn't help. Someone who really wants your car, stereo, or equipment, will get it and there's nothing we can do about it. Unless maybe getting someone to watch your car 24/7, but that's another article.

What this all boils down to is, that every car should still have some type of alarm system. Thiese alarms will ward off most petty thiefs, mostly teenagers, who want some of the smaller things such as the sunglasses or loose change. Those red blinking lights do offer alot more security than you think. And now, even some CD players come with their own security system. The Chameleon that flips around showing nothing and even Pioneer has their own security called DFS or, Detachable Face Security. Lock everything up and remove the face plate. When you come back you have a timer to either put the face back in or start the car. You can change the timer as well. If it's tripped, a loud shrieking sound will come from the speakers.

I should hope this answers most of your questions about Car Security and how it works. If not, look up my profile and email me! I'm always happy to talk car security, car stereo, or anything else.
