stick ups and downsJan 24 '00 Write an essay on this topic.I've driven both stick and automatic cars for an extended period of time. Now, i prefer stick-shift, although it does have its problems. for starters, you can't stop by taco bell and expect to eat and drive at the same time if you're driving a standard. Secondly, never ever ever try to drive through New York City with a stick-shift. In my opinion its terrible to drive through the city no matter what you're driving, but the constant stop and go can really put a knot in your calf. not to mention theres just no such thing as half gears so you've got to constantly be shifting back and forth, back and forth. Now, my argument against automatics. Sure, automatics are easier, but the downfall of this ease is that it makes people lazy. When you have to shift i believe much more energy and attention is put into what you are doing. therefore people who drive stick pay closer attention to driving. Driving is not something that should be done without thought. Thats how accidents happen and there are too many auto accidents when many can be avoided by simply paying attention to what you are doing. Also, having more control of RPM's adds another element to driving. Especially when driving in snow or crappy weather. Increased control is never a bad thing. If you know how to drive a stick I believe it gives you more control and therefore increases your ability to drive safely. Stick-shifts put you in more direct contact with the goin-ons of your engine plain and simple. Although stick-shifts can get tiresome at times I'd have to say they're the way to go. |
