Concerning pedestrians...WATCH OUT!
Feb 20 '00
I saw this category and just had to jump in and write on it. I was reminded of a very bad day last year when I had my first wreck. I would like to label this epinion as a separate category: How to Cross the Street Without Getting Hit Even if You Have a History of Mental Problems and are Drunk.
May 21, 1999. I hit a pedestrian. Go ahead, scream, yell, berate. "You idiot, watch where you are going." "What kind of an idiot would hit a pedestrian?" And the ever-popular: "Is she dead?" Let me explain:
Explanation
I was merging onto a highway which has four lanes heading East (and is on a bridge, anyway). As my head was turned to check traffic, a woman stepped out in front of me, and I turned my head back just in time to see her hit and fly (twenty feet, not bad). I pulled over and ran back to her, calling 911 as I went. It turned out that she had a history of mental problems and was drunk at the time.
Tips on How Not to Cross a Street (or Bridge)
~Don't do it in the middle of rush hour, wait.
~Don't do it when you are drunk.
~Don't do it if you have a history of mental problems (and are, ironically, on your way to the hospital for treatment), call a taxi.
~Look!
~Listen!
~Don't do it on a bridge.
~Don't do it on a four-lanes-in-one-direction highway
~Don't do it on a four-lanes-in-one-direction highway on a bridge.
What to Do if You Do Get Hit
Sue. Even if the police write it up as your fault, sue. After all, you might as well have $23,000 for your troubles. Why not?
Why did the pedestrian cross the road? Who knows, but she got paid for it!

Disclaimer: Do not try this without parental supervision. This is a true story, and she was only hurt (broken leg), but it could easily have been much worse. Be careful when you cross the street, and careful when you drive.
