Pros:Price
Cons:Cops know you have them, too
The first thing one should realize before purchasing any radar detector is that cops, like you, are quite aware of their presence and prevention utility. Thus, cops now wield more accurate, less detectable speed assessment devices that, when used properly, circumvent any radar detector. In my experience with my Whistler, I've found them useful on highways far more than side roads and two-lane highways, largely because of the volume of traffic. When hundreds of cars pass a speed trap per minute, the cop must leave on his radar/laser gun in order to obtain readings for all the cars. However, when cars pass only intermittently, the cop turns it on and off depending on whether there is a car approaching. When a police officer behaves this way, the radar detector has no function but to pre-inform you of your capture (the flashing lights will be the second indication). In light of these facts, I think the lower end detectors are a much better value than their high-end counterparts. A $60 detector will tell you that there is radar/laser activity ahead on the highway just as a $300 model does. The only advantage is that some of the more expensive detectors can differentiate between radar "noise" (I.E., bank security systems) and frequencies that are more likely to be speed traps. I do recommend this product, but largely because of its price rather than its function.
