Come ON - do radar detectors REALLY work any more?
by driver4t5 | Nov 27 '00
The Man loves to oppress those with a heavy right foot. The Man, however, doesn't love being oppressed by superior technology, and thusly he raises the bar in the high speed stakes. With the advent a few years ago of instant-on Ka band radar and the...

In California, Look Up (Reply to this comment)

One of the fastest stretch of freeway in California is Hwy 5 between Stockton and Los Angeles. I estimate that flow of traffic is between 80-90 mph when there's no congestion.

Radar detectors are useless here. CHP uses airplanes to spot the speeders and radio a squad car below to nab them.

I've "caught" a CHP officer using Ka band radars with my Uniden detector, but I had less than 2 seconds to react to it. Definitely not practical.

Laser is were it is at... (Reply to this comment)

Even in heavy traffic, I seriously doubt that most detectors are going to alert to laser in time for you to do anything about it. Laser is just too coherent a beam to provide enough scatter.

When I was an undergrad, a friend of mine and I played with some materials that absorbed and frequency shifted certain frequencies of light. We were trying to come up with a license plate coating that provided a false doppler shift when struck by laser light (most cops aim at the license plate since they are flat, reflective, and easy to see). Coatings and "stealthy" shape are probably the only real defense to Laser. Maybe an active jammer might work, but that wouldn't be to difficult to counter by the manufacturers.

I have a feeling that we are loosing the war. Eventually, only low police budgets for replacement equipment will save us.

Hi Jon
I'll have to start thinking about one of these real soon.
I drive to earn my crust (independant taxi-owner) and have had 3 tickets in the last year.
Up to now, they've only been $60 fines, but next year they are introducing PENALTY POINTS.
Shock, horror, loss of license, etc
Enjoyed the review.

They are pulling me over (because my lights are too bright!... no lie, I had to go to court!) when they should be stopping DUI's.

I think I have read every one of your reviews on radar detectors, I notice that you always point out that driver prudence is still required!

Great advice, great post!

Hehe...yeah, there are ways to beat this. In fact, besides the plate they also need a clear shot of the DRIVER - otherwise, who was REALLY behind the wheel?

All this and more coming up soon in my upcoming review "Screwing the Fuzz" by driver4t5_behind_bars and published by Attica Press...

Jon, do you have any tips on beating those photo-radar traps. Not the radar part but the photo part? I understand they have to have a clear picture of your license plate and your face to issue you a ticket through the mail, and I have heard about devices you can put on your license plate to wonky the picture and get you out of that ticket. Know anything about those? Please write a review if so, cuz I'm sure we'd all love to hear it.

But the California Highway Patrol doesn't use a radar detector like most city jurisdictions do. They use an infrared beam that calculated your speed.

A CHP friend even taught me how to calculate a very accurate speed while up in a helicopter! So watch it folks! Don't speed on California highways. Big Brother in the sky will nail you.

I wasn't immune to speeding tickets. I was the one pushing the pedal to the metal flat out testing a cars speed. City cops loved to ticket me. Several years ago I got the last laugh. It appears those radar guns those motor cops used was giving them cancer. When the officer put his radar gun down, he'd put it between his legs. Well, now they are finding a high incidence of testicular cancer for motor officers.

OK, that was mean. But I hated donating my money to the city/county. Everyone speeds.

Right on the Money.

Radar detector are effect but if there is no radar, then that box on the dash is useless.
-In N.Carolina they use X band but it is still instant-on K-55 By Kustom Signals. This Old but effect gun can pick a vehicle up at 1 mile but with a field of 4 foot field wide.
-The Newer Ka guns have a effective range up to 1 mile.
-A some K band gun have up to 2/3 mile.

There is Vascar no radar. Point to Point established 1960.

it is used more on the East Coast than West. My brother and relatives all had one and still might. Although now my Uncle and his brother are State Troopers so who knows.

But since being in CA in 85 I never heard of anyone buying one or see talk about them on tv.

Of course half the towns here have the cameras at the lights so that seems to be the wave of the future here, but for city traffic anyway.

The ex got pulled over driving from NJ to FL in 95 doing 85+ mph in our station wagon. Me and six week old baby in back seat. This Southern cop made me drive and no ticket.
