Oh No 23 miles of Construction

Aug 10 '00 (Updated Aug 15 '00)

Knowing the rules of the road is required when you take your driver's test, along with the operation of the vehicle to obtain your license for the first time. It is then you have earned the privilege to drive an automobile. Respect your privilege! Drive Smart!

A Smart Driver will... Use Seat Belts, walk around the car periodically to check for soft tires, checking all the lights to be sure they are in good working order. Listen for strange sounds/rattles as they are driving. Check your vehicle for any strange smells/gas leaks.

Drive with your doors locked. Did you know, by locking your doors as you drive, it keeps you safer not only in strange neighborhoods but also helps keeps the doors from flying open in case of an accident!

Last but not least..my general rule to being a Smart Driver is to Never pick up hitchhikers no matter what. If someone is broke down, you can call for help but never offer a ride, it could lead to trouble.

Keep your license clean by following some simple advice, Don't Drink and Drive, don't speed to get no where fast, follow the rules of the road every time you get behind the wheel of a vehicle. Obeying the Rules of the Road is a Golden Rule when learning How to Drive...my advice is to keep a level head and stay alert!

This past week I just drove 900+ miles to visit with my daughter in Buffalo New York. Along the way we ran into a lot of road construction, seen a few accident on the interstate when the roads where wet and slippery, some very reckless and uncaring drivers on the road and yes, a few pulled over for exceeding the 70 mile an hour speed limit that was posted. We also passed a few shady looking characters hitchhiking on the interstates...they may have been really nice people, but I wouldn't take that chance to find out.

Construction throughout the states were in full force and we found a lot of delays and heavy volume of traffic that was required to travel at a lower rate of speed than normal.

Most of the states had the work zones posted well in advance that construction was under way before the views of the orange cones came to view. The signs are there for a reason to... Protect the lives of the highway workers and the safety of yourself and your passengers.

Here are a few tips for traveling through a work zone area on the Highways or anywhere you will be driving whether it be long distance or local:

*** Always Buckle up and have your children secure in their car seat or seat belts.

*** Slow down in the work zone areas and follow the posted speed limits. Keep in mind that traffic can stop at any given time so follow the flow of traffic with a cushion between you and the vehicle ahead of you.

*** Stay Alert

*** Read and Obey the signs!

*** Drive Smart

I did notice that many of the states we traveled had the fines posted for exceeding the work zone speed limits some were as high as $250.00....wow is it worth it to speed through the work zone, let alone taking the chance of causing an accident to get to your destination a little quicker or just to speed up to get caught up with the traffic?
My answer is "NO".

For those of you who will be traveling the highways and interstates you can always check for construction before you travel by contacting the Department of Transportation via the internet at WWW.DOT.STATE.(WHATEVER STATE(s)YOU WILL BE TRAVELING).US
One example is; http://www.dot.state.pa.us. Along with using Mapquest, this site helped us to plan out our driving strategy for the best possible route to take.

This site will give you valuable information on where you will run into construction so you can plan your travel destination, be better prepared for the trip ahead prior to your travels.

Happy traveling... Stay Safe!
BUCKLE UP! .. STAY ALERT! .. DRIVE SMART!
