The shopping Nightmare or how to buy a Car and get an ulcer
May 13 '00
If I had to choose between buying a car and going into hard labor, I swear it would give me pause. I am the savvy one in my family, the head honcho of deals, the coupon queen etc. This is one area where even I can be brought to my knees. I will give some funny advise on what not to do .
1. If you are buying a car for your husband or teenaged son, do not bring them along without explaining to them they must be absolutely mute at the car salesman's desk. The sales people love to add on that extra thing or two the minute hubby states " I adore this model and can't live without it" That is the death knell to the bargain hunter.
2. What is it with this shoving the price on a scrap of paper across the desk? Can you imagine doing business this way at the supermarket or the clothing store? When this happens, don't grab the piece of paper and jump out of the seat. Unless your jumping to the nearest exit. I actually had a salesman follow me out to the parking lot, knock on the window of my car and tell me he accepts my offer.
3. Don't hand them your car keys to inspect your vehicle for a trade. You may not get them back without calling the cops. This is a ploy to keep you in the showroom as long as possible to try and sell you that car.
5. When they offer you 39.95 for your 1998 Honda get up and leave.
6. When they ask what will it take to get you into this car? Tell them a chauffeur, a bottle of your finest champagne, and tom cruise paying for it.
7. Take whatever the sales people say with a grain of cement. If they tell you you won't find the car cheaper- get up and move to the nearest exit. Check around. I had legitimate price quotes from a manager of a local dealer. I shopped it around . When they told me I had been " classically lowballed" I went back to the other dealer and bought my car. The nice part is I went back to that dealer for service driving my new car. It killed them.
The one tip I found useful was belonging to the AAA. I bought my new toyota echo through the buying service connected to the AAA. It saved me a bundle. You can also check on the internet. I found this good to get a general price range. The price quotes I got through AAA were better. I also found that priceline was more money too.
