Why I love my convertible

Oct 31 '00

For those of you who have read my Epinion about my car (2000 Ford Mustang) this will be close but I wanted to touch on some of the finer points of owning a convertible and maybe helping those of you who are on the fence just go for it!

1) Climate was my number one factor. I grew up in Western Massachusetts where snow tires were a requirement in the winter months, and rain storms came and went with no warning. A convertible there as your primary vehicle is not advisable. As a second car, it would be feasible for summer use. After moving to California 4 years ago, I knew I wanted to have one while I was living here. I have had the top down in both December and June and every month in between.

2) Long hair: BEWARE. I have long hair, enough to cause a problem if not pulled back while driving with the top down. I find that having it wrapped securely in a bun helps to lessen the knot factor. A ponytail causes large tangles, which I often spend a good chunk of time pulling out. Hair sounds like a silly factor when deciding whether or not to buy a car, but those with thinning hair or very long hair, be careful. You will lose some!

3) Maintenance: my 2000 model has a glass rear window. Many of the older cars, actually all of them, have a vinyl rear window, which I hear is problematic. Since I have no direct knowledge on the subject, I really can't comment. I can say that my glass window has not given me a problem at all. The top itself has not been much of a problem either. The only thing I have noticed is that it gets dirty easy. My top is white (rare) and it gets oil/grease stains much easier than a darker one, and they are very noticeable. I have had it detailed a few times, but some of the more stubborn stains remain. One piece of advice: do not put the top down if it is wet. Let it dry completely before doing so.

4) Extremely hot weather: keep the top up!!! We had a very bad heat wave last June (100+ degrees) and I made the mistake of putting my top down. I nearly turned crispy while waiting at a stoplight. Not to mention the fact that I think my leather almost melted. Optimal driving days are in the 70's with partly sunny to sunny skies. Night is also fun, just turn on the heat a little!

5) Leather vs. cloth: personal choice. I wanted a car with leather and have not regretted that choice. I do not think I will ever purchase another car without it. It DOES get very hot, and I keep a towel in my trunk to sit on if the seat gets too hot. Black leather would be worse, I would think. Mine is tan and it is bad enough.

6) Backseat/trunk: nonexistent. I have held 3 other large males in my car, although not very easily. It is most certainly not designed to be a passenger car. I believe the Sebring does have a more adequate backseat, but I also think the look of that particular car is less sporty. My trunk will hold my overnight bag and that is about it! Definitely not good for moving things either. These are sacrifices I have made, and whenever I need a bigger car, I borrow my boyfriend's.

I LOVE my convertible and am very protective of it (no compact parking spaces for me!) There is nothing more therapeutic than getting in my Mustang, putting the top down and speeding down the freeway. Something about the sun overhead and the cool air in my face does it. I have enjoyed my car from the first day, and will enjoy every second it is in my possession.
