Head on at 60 MPHAug 31 '00 Write an essay on this topic. This evening in Los Angeles we were treated to our daily car chase (actually we had two today - a high speed and a low speed). A stolen car was chased on a few different freeways until it finally transitioned onto a freeway into oncoming traffic. The stolen car barreled down the carpool lane at about 60 MPH and within minutes collided with a Toyota Camry; also going about 60 MPH. To everyone's amazement nobody was killed; they were injured but no critically. As of now they're in =serious= condition. The clip on TV shows the collision and it is clear that the airbags on both vehicles deployed and the front-ends were demolished. Although the news reporter said they hit at the force of 120 MPH I know there is some other calculation to determine kinetic energy (thanks to the Discovery Channel); the force of the impact might actually have been a couple hundred miles per hour. The long and short of this is in this case airbags looked like a good thing and I don't know if the occupants were wearing seatbelts but I'm glad my wife drives a Camry. Now if you can keep people from crossing their legs in front of; and propping their feet on the airbag compartment they could save your life - hopefully without your foot in your mouth or a broken back. |
